Women’s Tennis opens spring with losses to CMU, SUU

Kyra Harames wins at No. 2 singles vs. CMU and No. 1 singles vs. SUU

The Dixie State women's tennis team opened its spring schedule on Saturday at Bloomington Country Club with losses to Colorado Mesa (5-4) and Southern Utah (7-2).

The Trailblazers (3-3) opened the day with a matchup with future RMAC foe Colorado Mesa. DSU dropped two of three doubles matches to open the match as Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley) and Sabrina Longson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus) earned a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles for the team's lone doubles win.

The teams battled back and forth during singles play and split the matches as the Mavericks clinched the close win. Harames battled to a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles, while Longson rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles. Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) also secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles.

The Trailblazers also dropped two of three doubles matches to open the match vs. Southern Utah in the afternoon matchup as Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) and Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View) earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Dixie State was unable to overcome the deficit during singles play as the Thunderbirds took five of the six matches. Harames shined in singles play, earning a 7-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles, while Hina Goldsmith dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 loss at No. 3 singles.

The Trailblazers now head to southern California with matches at Concordia-Irvine and Cal State LA on Thursday and next Monday, respectively.
