No. 15/19 Trailblazers Handle CS San Bernardino Sunday, 12-2

DSU wraps up season-opening homestand with a 4-2 record

No. 15/19 Dixie State wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2018 season with a convincing 12-2 victory in seven innings over Cal State San Bernardino Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Trailblazers (4-2) wasted little time breaking into the scoring column as Gabe Taylor (Pittsburg, Calif./Clayton Valley Charter School) led off the game with a single, stole second and plated the game's first run on a Kyle Hoffman (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) base hit. DSU wound up scoring five runs in the opening frame on six hits, including RBI-safeties from Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS), Kade Urban and Kade Cloward (South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS), while Alec Flemetakis (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) collected a painful RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as DSU sent 10 batters to the plate.

Dixie State would add another run in the third on an Urban infield single before tacking on four more runs in the fourth to extend to a 10-0 advantage. The early run support was more than enough for senior southpaw Matt Mosca (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron Memorial HS) (W, 1-0), who rebounded from a shaky first inning by retiring 12 of the next 14 Coyotes he faced over his next four innings with five strikeouts.

CSUSB (0-4) spoiled the shutout bid with pair of runs in the sixth to trim the DSU lead to 11-2, but the Trailblazers got one of those runs back in the home half of the frame on a two-out Coyote throwing error. Dixie State reliever Brecken Lewis (Cedar City, Utah/Cedar HS) then worked around a two-out single in the seventh to preserve the 10-run lead, which ended the game (coaches' agreement).

Urban finished with three hits and three RBI to lead the Trailblazers, while Porter and Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) collected two hits apiece as DSU outhit CSUSB 13-6. Mosca scattered two runs (one earned) and five hits over 5.1 innings of work with those five punch outs to earn the victory in his season debut.

Dixie State will pack the bags for the first time this season next weekend as the Trailblazers open an eight-game road swing with a four-game set at nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa Feb. 16-18, in Grand Junction.
