Trailblazers hold off Antelope Valley, 74-60

DSU sets single-game free throw percentage record

Dixie State women's basketball wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 74-60 victory over Antelope Valley on Saturday inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (6-3) closed out the 2018 calendar year in record-breaking fashion, setting a new program record for single-game free throw percentage. Dixie State connected on 30-of-31 (96.8 percent) free throw attempts, with its lone miss from the charity stripe coming in the first quarter.

The teams traded baskets and leads throughout the first half of a fast-paced first quarter. Keslee Stevenson broke a 12-12 tie with a pair of free throws to give Dixie State a 14-12 advantage at the 4:22 mark. The free throws sparked a 10-5 Trailblazer run to close the frame, as the home squad took a 22-17 lead into the second quarter. Ali Franks scored five points during the stretch, including a triple with one minute remaining in the period.

The Trailblazers clamped down defensively in the second quarter, holding the Pioneers to nine points in the frame. Meanwhile, DSU continued its scoring run, pushing the overall run to 24-5 to take a 36-17 lead at the 4:50 mark of the second period. UAV broke its scoreless streak two minutes later with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 36-19. The freebies started a 9-2 run for the visitors to cut the DSU lead to 38-26 at halftime.

Antelope Valley picked up where it left off in the third quarter, opening the frame on a 15-6 run to cut the lead to 44-41 at the 5:25 mark. The Trailblazers responded with a 14-3 run to build a 58-44 lead heading to the final period. Stevenson scored eight points during the run, including a trey and a traditional 3-point play.

The Trailblazers pushed the lead to 20 points at 66-46 at the 7:08 mark of the fourth quarter when Mariah Martin converted a layup attempt. UAV countered with a 14-4 run to pull to within 70-60 at the 1:09 mark. But the visitors wouldn't get any closer. Franks connected on two free throws and Martin added a layup to close out the 74-60 win.

Dixie State shot 40 percent (19-of-47) from the field, 35 percent (6-of-17) from 3-point range, and 96 percent (30-of-31) from the free throw line. Martin led all scorers with a season-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and four assists, while Franks added 17 points and nine rebounds, and Stevenson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Trailblazers return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday at UC-Colorado Springs and on Saturday at Colorado School of Mines.
