Dixie State football is back at Trailblazer Stadium on Saturday to host No. 6 Colorado School of Mines at 1 p.m. in the 2018 home finale. The game will serve as the annual Homecoming game as well as Senior Day.
Live coverage is scheduled on television (CEC-TV – TDS Cable Channel 22), radio (ESPN Radio 97.7 FM), and internet (portal.stretchinternet.com/dixiestate), with Keric Seegmiller serving as play-by-play announcer and Andy Thompson providing color commentary and analysis. Drayson Ball will join the crew to provide further analysis from the booth and the sideline.
ALL-TIME ON HOMECOMING SATURDAY: Saturday's matchup marks Dixie State's 13th homecoming game of its NCAA Division II era (2006-present). The Trailblazers currently hold a 5-7 record in Homecoming Saturday matchups with victories over Humboldt State (2008, 2013), Western Oregon (2009), Menlo College (2014), and most recently a 54-28 triumph over Adams State last season. Â
SENIOR DAY: The game will also serve as the team's senior day, as 16 seniors participate in their final DSU home game, including Jerico Dayao, Sebastian Demartini, Brad Duran, Remington Kelly, Charlie Koka, Jordan Nichols, Shiloh Pritchard, Tyson Roberts, Michael Sanders, Tevia Tolutau, Tane Tuifua, Trayvon Watson, Bryce Willette, Donovan Williams, Parker Williams, and Ryen Wilson.
ALL-TIME VS. AFCA RANKED OPPONENTS: Saturday's game marks DSU's third contest against a ranked opponent in 2018 and the 17th overall meeting between Dixie State and an opponent ranked in the AFCA Top-25. No. 6 Colorado School of Mines marks the second time this season DSU has faced a Top-10 team. The Trailblazers are 1-15 all-time in matchups against ranked opponents, securing its first and only win over a ranked opponent in a 38-31 victory over No. 23 Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction in 2016.
ALL-TIME VS. COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES: Saturday's game marks the third matchup between Dixie State and Colorado Mines. The Orediggers used 34 second-half points to spoil DSU's homecoming festivities with a 62-27 triumph in 2016, before claiming a 19-17 win last season in a nailbiter in Golden, Colorado, to build a 2-0 lead in the series.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Colorado School of Mines enters the weekend ranked sixth in the AFCA Top-25 poll and holds an unblemished 9-0 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in RMAC play.
The Orediggers are the NCAA Division II leaders in total offense, averaging 552.3 yards (333.2 pass/219.1 rush) per game. Senior quarterback Isaac Harker leads the RMAC and ranks third nationally in passing yards, completing 208-of-303 passes for 2,874 yards. Additionally, Harker has thrown 34 touchdown passes, more than any other quarterback in any NCAA division. Harker's main target is All-American Brody Oliver, who ranks third in the RMAC and seventh nationally with 55 receptions for 1,005 yards and 19 touchdowns. Not to be outdone, running back Cameron Mayberry leads the RMAC and ranks seventh nationally with 1,153 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns on 192 carries.
Defensively, the Orediggers rank second in the RMAC, allowing 342.1 yards (242.6 pass/99.5 rush) of total offense per game. The CSM defense spreads the wealth, as five players have recorded 40 or more tackles, including Averia Mansfield (48), Geoff Keating (45), Grant Gale (45), Logan Bock (41), and Anthony Makransky (40). Bock is also the team leader with six sacks, while Keating and Makransky each have two interceptions.
Kicker Scott Marshall leads the CSM special teams unit and has converted a perfect 39-of-39 point-after attempts. Marshall also handles punting duties, averaging 41.4 yards per punt.
LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State quarterback Michael Sanders scored his first rushing touchdown of the season on Saturday in a wild third quarter against Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado. More importantly, his 1-yard run, and the ensuing extra point, would tie the game at 24-24 with just under six minutes remaining in the frame.
But the Trailblazers wouldn't score again. Meanwhile, Colorado Mesa responded to the DSU touchdown run with 21 unanswered points over the next nine minutes of game time to clinch a 45-24 victory.
Following the Sanders touchdown, the Mavericks countered with an 11-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 28-yard touchdown run to retake a 31-24 lead.
Dixie State looked to answer on its next drive, moving the ball near midfield when Sanders connected with Xavier Smith for a 12-yard pass. But the next pass was intercepted by CMU defensive back Antonio Clark, who raced 62 yards the other way for a touchdown to push the lead to 38-24 with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter.
The Mavericks tacked on the final touchdown of the game less than two minutes into the final frame, breaking free for an 85-yard touchdown rush to push the score to the final tally of 45-24.
MAKING THE GRADE: For the second consecutive season Remington Kelly (3.612 GPA) was named to the RMAC Football All-Academic Team on Wednesday. Eight other Trailblazers landed on the RMAC Football Honor Roll, including Hunter Christensen (3.936), Brad Duran (3.741), Blake Ence (3.657), Beda Galleta (3.597), Sei-J Lauago (3.379) Gage Manzione (3.751) Michael Sanders (3.475) and A.J. Yergensen (3.882).
LEADING THE LEAGUE: Dixie State's 32 total sacks is tops in the RMAC. CSU-Pueblo ranks second with 31 sacks.
Freshman punter Josh Carlson currently leads the RMAC in punting, averaging 45.7 yards per punt on 53 attempts. Carlson has booted 17 punts of 50 yards or more and has placed another 14 kicks inside the 20-yard line.
CHASING HISTORY: Sei-J Lauago moved into the No. 2 spot on the Dixie State career rushing list with 82 yards rushing at Black Hills State on September 29, passing Blake Barney and Adams Wells. Since then, Lauago has added 231 yards for a career total of 1,631 rushing yards and needs 91 more yards to pass DeJon Coleman (2015-16; 1,721 yards) to become the DSU career rushing leader. Â
MAKING HISTORY: Michael Sanders set two DSU passing records and tied another on October 20 at Chadron State. He completed 39-of-60 passes for 527 yards and one touchdown, setting the single-game passing yards and attempts record, while tying the single-game completions record. Additionally, Sanders became the first DSU quarterback in the Division II era to pass for 500 yards or more in a single game.
The Dixie State defense set two different records on October 13 in the win over Western Colorado. The Trailblazers set a new DSU single-game sacks record (6.0; vs. Humboldt State/Western New Mexico, 2008) with seven sacks in the victory. The feat also pushed the team's season total to 28 total sacks, breaking the single-season sack record (27.0; 2008) in the process. DSU has added four more sacks for a total of 32 sacks.
Dixie State pushed its win streak to four games and its record to 4-1 on September 29 with a 41-38 triumph at Black Hills State, marking DSU's longest win streak and best start of its Division II- era.
Dixie State students and fans packed the stands at Trailblazer Stadium on September 8, setting a new single-game attendance record of 5,498. The mark surpassed the previous record of 5,320 set during the 2006 home-opener against Humboldt State.
Josh Carlson set a new Dixie State record in his Trailblazer debut with an 81-yard punt in the third quarter at CSU-Pueblo on September 1, eclipsing the previous mark of 78 yards set by Nate Lewis against Humboldt State in 2007.
UP NEXT: Dixie State closes the 2018 season with a trip to Alamosa, Colorado, for a battle against Adams State next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
