After a two-game road swing spanning nearly 5,400 round-trip miles, Dixie State football is back at home on Saturday to host Western State in a 1 p.m. matchup at Trailblazer Stadium.
Live coverage is scheduled on television (CEC-TV – TDS Cable Channel 22), radio (Radio Dixie 91.3 FM), and internet (portal.stretchinternet.com/dixiestate), with Keric Seegmiller serving as play-by-play announcer and Drayson Ball providing color commentary and analysis.
FAMILY DAY: Saturday's game will serve as Family Day at Trailblazer Stadium. All Washington County school teachers, students, and alumni who present a school ID or proof of employment will receive free admission to the game. All other general admission tickets are buy one, get one free. The game is sponsored by TDS and those who attend will have the chance to win a Dixie State/TDS branded t-shirt.
ALL-TIME VS. WESTERN COLORADO: Saturday's game marks the third meeting between Dixie State and Western Colorado. The teams first met on Oct. 1, 2016, at Trailblazer Stadium. The Trailblazers earned a 28-20 victory in the inaugural matchup despite being outgained 394-378 by the Mountaineers. Dixie State took a 2-0 lead in the series last season, outlasting Western for a 15-12 victory inside the Mountaineer Bowl in Gunnison, Colorado, on Sept. 30, 2017.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Western State enters the weekend with an 0-6 overall record and an 0-5 mark in RMAC play. The Mountaineers battled Division I Idaho State in their first game of the season, falling 45-10. WCU pushed 2017 RMAC champion Colorado Mesa to the brink on September 15, but fell 24-20. The Mountaineers also took Adams State to overtime, but dropped a 55-52 decision inside the Mountaineer Bowl.
WCU averages 322.8 yards (175.2 pass/147.8) of total offense per game. Sophomore quarterback Dylan Jacob has completed 63-of-123 pass attempts for 668 yards and six touchdowns. Jacob's favorite targets include Christian Lancellotti (18 rec/155 yards/2 TD), Zach Manchester (18 rec/205 yards/TD), and Elijah Gillespi (12 rec/125 yards/3 TD). Isaac Fuqua powers the rushing attack with 600 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Defensively, the Mountaineers allow 469.7 yards (279.0 pass/190.7 rush) of total offense per game. Linebacker Lane Farris leads the WCU defensive attack ranks seventh in the RMAC with 52 tackles, while defensive lineman Mark Zavala leads the team with 4.0 sacks.
Kicker Chandler Davis leads the WCU special teams, converting 14-of-17 point-after attempts and 3-of-6 field goals.
LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State dropped a 35-14 decision to No. 2 Grand Valley State on Saturday at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Michigan.
Dixie State finished with 321 yards (253 pass/68 rush) of total offense. Sanders completed 14-of-26 passes for 150 yards, while Smith connected on 7-of-12 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Lauago led all DSU rushers with 37 yards on 18 carries. Xavier Smith (Kansas City, Mo./Ruskin HS) led all DSU receivers with five catches for 72 yards.
Defensively, the Trailblazers allowed 382 yards (246 pass/136 rush) of total offense. Travyon Watson led the defense with a season-high nine tackles, while Abraham Reinhardt (Wailuku, Hawaii/H.P. Baldwin HS) and Mike Jones (San Diego, Calif./Mount Miguel HS) added eight tackles each.
CHASING HISTORY: Sei-J Lauago (Paramount, Calif./La Mirada HS) moved into the No. 2 spot on the Dixie State career rushing list with 82 yards rushing at Black Hills State on September 29, passing Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) and Adams Wells. Lauago added 37 yards on Saturday at Grand Valley State for a career total of 1,437 rushing yards and needs 285 more yards to pass DeJon Coleman (2015-16; 1,721 yards) to become the DSU career rushing leader. MAKING HISTORY: Dixie State pushed its win streak to four games on September 29 with a 41-38 triumph at Black Hills State, marking DSU's longest win streak of its Division II- era.
The Trailblazers improved to 3-1 on September 22 with a 51-47 win over South Dakota Mines, marking the best start of the Dixie State NCAA Division II era.
Dixie State students and fans packed the stands at Trailblazer Stadium on September 8, setting a new single-game attendance record of 5,498. The mark surpassed the previous record of 5,320 set during the 2006 home-opener against Humboldt State.
Freshman punter Josh Carlson (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) set a new Dixie State record in his Trailblazer debut with an 81-yard punt in the third quarter at CSU-Pueblo on September 1, eclipsing the previous mark of 78 yards set by Nate Lewis against Humboldt State in 2007.
UP NEXT: Dixie State heads to Chadron, Nebraska, next Saturday for a showdown against Chadron State. Kickoff is set for Noon.
