Women’s Basketball closes homestand with loss to CBU

Trailblazers go cold in the second half in loss

The Dixie State women's basketball team closed a four-game homestand Monday with a 57-50 loss to California Baptist inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (7-8, 3-5 PacWest) led for nearly 21 minutes in the contest compared to just over 12 minutes for the Lancers, but went cold in the fourth quarter and scored just six points in the final frame as the visitors clinched the victory.

Dixie State jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter behind a Keslee Stevenson (Willard, Utah/Box Elder HS) 3-pointer and two points each from Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) and Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS). CBU answered with consecutive baskets, but DSU countered with five unanswered points and another Stevenson trey to push the lead back to 12-7. The teams went back and forth over the final three minutes of the quarter and the Trailblazers took a 15-12 lead to the second quarter.

The teams traded leads throughout the second quarter as neither team managed a lead larger than three points in the frame. Dixie State closed the quarter with a Taylor Moeaki (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) triple and a Baldwin layup to take a 29-26 lead to the break.

The Lancers scored the first basket of the third quarter to tie the game at 29-29, but the Trailblazers responded with jumpers from Moeaki and Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) and a Baldwin layup to build a 35-29 advantage at the 7:20 mark. But DSU went cold after the run and went more than four minutes with scoring. Meanwhile, CBU used an 11-0 run to build a 40-35 lead. Moeaki ended the drought with a 3-pointer at the 3:03 mark, and the Trailblazers eventually tied the game at 44-44 heading to the final frame.

The Trailblazers took a 47-46 lead early in the fourth quarter when Franks converted a layup with a foul and made the free throw for a traditional 3-point play. But, like the third quarter, DSU went cold after taking the lead. This time, the Trailblazers went nearly six minutes without scoring. Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS) ended the scoring freeze with a free throw at the 3:20 mark, but the Trailblazers would only get two more points and fell, 57-50.

Dixie State shot 28 percent (18-of-63) from the field, 24 percent (6-of-25) from 3-point range, and 72 percent (8-of-11) from the free throw line. Franks finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Moeaki chipped in another 12 points with four rebounds. Baldwin added eight points and 16 rebounds.

The Trailblazers now head to California for a stretch of four games in seven days in the Bay Area, beginning at Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific Time (2 p.m. MT).
