Dixie State netted a school record seven first-half goals as the Trailblazers christened the new turf at Legend Solar Stadium with an 8-2 victory over Westminster College Friday afternoon.
The Trailblazers (4-1-0) struck first early in the sixth minute when junior
Jamie Iurato (Mesa, Ariz./Heritage Academy) drew a penalty kick chance on a foul inside the Griffins' (3-2-0) penalty area. Iurato would go on to cash in the free kick for her first goal of the season to give DSU a quick 1-0 lead.
Dixie State then erupted for six goals in the span of 14 minutes, the first coming late in the 27
th-minute off an Iurato feed to freshman
Brooklyn Vogelsberg (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) (3), who broke free on a 2-v-0 run, side-stepped the Griffin keeper and tucked the ball into the empty net. Iurato also set up DSU's third goal two minutes later when she played a ball to senior
Darian Murdock (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) (5), who fired home a shot from the left wing to spot her side a 3-0 advantage.
DSU kept the momentum rolling in the 33
rd-minute as
Tori Page (Centerville, Utah/Viewmont HS) scored her third goal of the year from the right wing on a ball played in by
Tana Singley (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS). Singley then set up goal number five midway through the 35
th-minute when she booted a corner kick into the Griffin box, which Murdock headed to sophomore
Bailey Kroll (Meridian, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS), who tucked in her first collegiate goal from point blank range to give DSU a 5-0 lead.
Singley would get into the goal-scoring act 38 seconds later with her first of the season, then picked up her third assist of the match in the 41
st-minute on DSU's seventh goal of the frame when she crossed a ball to junior
Taylor Claiborne (Peoria, Ariz./Raymond S. Kellis HS) (1), who booted in a shot to the lower right hand corner of the frame.
Dixie State tacked on one more goal in the second stanza when Singley and Page teamed up again late in the 79
th-minute. Singley chipped a ball into the box and Page one-touched the ball past a sprawling Griffin keeper and into the net.
Westminster spoiled the Trailblazers' shutout bid at the 65:01 mark of the match when Jayde Jones went top shelf on a free kick from the left wing. The Griffins also netted another goal on a free kick with seven seconds left in regulation on a Jayne Christensen blast.
"I'm so impressed with our attack today with seven different goal scorers we are bound to be dangerous," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We got the momentum in the first half and could not be stopped. We gave up two set pieces [in the second half], which was disappointing, but we were still solid defensively."
Dixie State outshot Westminster by a 26-10 count, including a 15-7 edge on goal. Sophomore keeper
Felicity Tarr (Tucson, Ariz./Mountain View Marana HS) stopped two shots in 45 shutout minutes to pick up the win in goal. Singley's four assists tied her with former DSU player
Shannon Larsen, who collected four assists in a 4-0 DSU win over Grand Canyon on Oct. 30, 2009.
DSU's seven first half goals bested the previous record of six, which was first set against Westminster in the final game of the 2006 season (W, 9-0; 10/28/06), and tied 2007 in a 10-2 victory over Northwest Christian College (9/7) in a match played at Westminster College. Meanwhile, the eight goals scored were the fourth-most in a single match in DSU's NCAA-era.
Dixie State continues its five-match homestand and begins its final season of Pacific West Conference play next week as the Trailblazers host Chaminade on Thursday, Sept. 21, and league newcomer Biola on Saturday, Sept. 23.
