Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) recorded his first career hat trick to help power past Colorado-Colorado Springs, 5-0, Monday morning at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Dixie State (4-0-0) aggressively attacked the UCCS (0-4-0) defensive third from the get-go and created a great scoring chance two minutes into play when
Ather Dawood (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) blasted a shot toward the open net. Mountain Lion defender Jared Salisbury managed to stop the shot, but was called for an intention hand-ball foul, which led to an immediate red card ejection and penalty kick chance. However DSU could not convert the penalty try as UCCS keeper David Meyer made the save on the attempt.
DSU mounted another charge two minutes later as Medina got the Trailblazers on the board when he took a ball played in by Dawood from the right wing and fired it into the net late in the fourth minute of play. Meanwhile, the Trailblazer defense held the Mountain Lions without a shot attempt through the first 45 minutes of play as DSU took its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Dixie State would erupt for four second half goals, the first coming off the boot of
Jandir Porta (West Valley City, Utah/Hunter HS) (1) on a Medina feed midway through the 68
th-minute to stake his side to a two-goal advantage. DSU then tallied two more goals in a span of 17 seconds in the 80
th-minute as
Gabby Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) netted his second goal of the year on a pass from
Dominic Damato (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS), while
Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) followed his older brother's goal with his second of the match to put DSU up 4-0.
Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) (4) then added an exclamation point midway through the 82
nd-minute with his third goal of the match to cap a record day for the Trailblazers. Medina broke the DSU single-match record for points in a match with seven (3G/1A), while he joined former DSU striker
Jordan Roylance (2009-12) as the only two players to record a hat trick in the program's NCAA era. Roylance accomplished the feat twice as a freshman in 2009 vs. Chaminade (10/8) and at BYU-Hawaii (10/20).
Dixie State's five goals also tied the school's single match record, as did the Trailblazers' 14 total points (5G/4A). DSU had scored five goals in a match in four previous occasions, the last coming a year-to-the-day vs. the University of Mary (9/11/16) in Billings, Mont. The Trailblazers also tallied a school-record 14 points in that match.
DSU outshot UCCS by a 23-6 count, including a 12-3 edge on goal, as the Trailblazers played stout defense in recording its second-straight shutout result. Freshman netminder
Levi Lord (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) made three saves in 90 minutes to earn his first collegiate win in goal.
Dixie State will enjoy a 10-day break before kicking off its 2017 home slate with a four-match PacWest homestand, beginning with the conference-opener vs. Chaminade at Legend Solar Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.
