No. 3 2016-17 Top Moment – Athletic Facilities Upgrades

Note: This story is the eighth of a 10-week series featuring the Top-10 Moments of the Dixie State Athletics 2016-17 season. A new top moment will be unveiled each Wednesday, until the final moment is announced on August 16.

The 2016-17 season brought numerous Trailblazer Athletics facilities upgrades, ranging from major renovations at Legend Solar Stadium, Burns Arena, the Habibian Center, and Bruce Hurst Field, to less extensive work inside the Student Activities Center and at Karl Brooks Field. Let's take a look at each facility.

The upgrades began early in the 2016-17 season, when after being renamed to Legend Solar Stadium, the scoreboard and press box were updated to match the stadium's name. Later, after the conclusion of the fall sports season, construction began on phase one of the stadium upgrades, adding a new track and field. Major construction could be seen inside the stadium from early February to late June, just before the City of St. George Fourth of July celebration inside the stadium.

As part of the renovations, the hill below the scoreboard was removed and a large retaining wall put in its place, expanding the size of the grass practice field south of the main field. Work on the second phase, the addition of grandstands on the east side of the stadium, is expected to begin this fall.

The main priority inside the Burns Arena as the 2016-17 season began was a re-branding of the court inside the arena. Work on the court began early in the 2016-17 year and was completed just before the new school year began. Later in the season, the arena concourse received a major facelift, as walls were painted and new branding was placed in the main entrance and around each restroom and concession area. Finally, as the 2016-17 academic year came to a close, LED video boards were added to the arena.

The Habibian Center also received a much needed facelift, as new wall pads were added inside the Habibian Center in April, with new weight racks added later to complete the upgrades.

Bruce Hurst Field saw work begin on an upgraded alumni clubhouse in mid-July. Work is on-going at the clubhouse, but will be completed in time for fall practice.

Other athletic facilities around campus also received minor upgrades, including the Student Activities Center and Karl Brooks Field, which were updated with new logos and branding.
