No. 12 Softball opens trip with DH split at Hawai’i Hilo

The No. 12 Dixie State softball team opened its 10-game Hawaiian Island trip with a Pacific West Conference doubleheader split at Hawai'i Hilo on Sunday.

The Trailblazers (20-5, 6-2 PacWest) opened the day with an 8-0 shutout victory in five innings, but couldn't complete the doubleheader sweep. DSU dropped a 1-0 decision in game two, as the Vulcans sealed the win with a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 8, Hawai'i Hilo 0 (5 innings)

Dixie State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one, turning one hit and one UHH error into the two-run advantage. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) open the inning with a walk, then moved to second after Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) reached on a throwing error. Bassett scored on the next play when Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) hit an infield RBI-single. Hartman later scored when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) grounded out to third base.

Gonzalez sparked a three-run inning for the Trailblazers in the top of the fourth with a leadoff blast over the left field wall for her ninth home run of the season. Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) drove in a run in the inning with an RBI-single to right field, before Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) pushed the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Dixie State logged the three runs necessary to end the game in five innings in the top of the fifth. Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) opened the scoring in the inning with a 2 RBI-double to center field. Yung later drove an RBI-single to right field to push the DSU lead to the final count of 8-0.

Hawai'i Hilo loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth, but Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) forced a popup to third base to clinch the five-inning victory.

Gonzalez led the offensive attack in game one, going 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBI. Paulson also logged a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI. Beardshear improved to 9-1 in the pitcher's circle, logging her fourth complete-game shutout of the season.

GAME TWO – Hawai'i Hilo 1, Dixie State 0

Dixie State logged just three hits in game two, but found other ways to get runners on base. However, those base runners were each stranded. The Trailblazers left nine runners on base, including four different innings with a runner left on third base.

The Trailblazers made up for the lack of hits with solid defense as Alexandria Melendez (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View HS) allowed just three hits and struck out a career-high seven batters to keep the Vulcans scoreless through six innings.

DSU saw its best opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when Gonzalez opened the inning with a leadoff double. Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS) entered as a pinch runner for Gonzalez and moved to third with just one out after a sacrifice bunt by Paulson. But Delange was stranded at third, as the next two batters were retired.

Dixie State saw another opportunity pass by when Bassett tripled with two outs in the top of the seventh. Hartman then drew a hit-by-pitch to put runners on the corners. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) looked to break the tie and drove a line drive down the left side, but the UHH third baseman snared the drive to end the inning.

Hawai'i Hilo clinched the victory in the bottom half of the seventh. The Vulcans opened the inning with a single to center field, and moved the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt. Cristina Menjivar then entered the game as a pinch hitter and drove a walk-off single to left field.

The Trailblazers now head to Honolulu for a four-game series with Chaminade on Tuesday and Wednesday.
