DSU Women drop 82-71 decision to BYU-Hawaii Saturday

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped an 82-71 decision to BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie, Hawaii, in the final meeting between the teams before BYU-H drops its intercollegiate athletics.

The Trailblazers (4-20, 4-14 PacWest) jumped out to a 9-4 lead after Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) and Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) each connected on 3-pointers. BYU-Hawaii responded with an 8-3 run to tie the game at 12-12 at the 6:07 mark. The teams would trade baskets over the final six minutes of the quarter until Ventling buried another triple to pull within 22-21 at the end of the period.

The Seasiders built a 37-30 lead in the second quarter, but Dixie State closed the period on a 7-0 run, capped by a Gabrielle Cabanero (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley HS) trey, to tie the game at 37-37 at the halftime break.

BYU-Hawaii opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run over the first three and a half minutes of the period to take a 48-37 lead at the 6:38 mark. DSU countered with a 7-0 run as Ventling hit another 3-pointer to pull the Trailblazers to within 48-44. But they would get no closer.

The teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter as the Trailblazers never cut the BYU-H advantage to less than nine points, and the Seasiders clinched the 82-71 victory.

Dixie State 43 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 38 percent (8-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 68 percent (13-of-19) from the free throw line. Franks led the DSU attack with a career-high 19 points, while Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) added 17 points and seven rebounds, and Ventling finished with 13 points.

The Trailblazers close their three-game Hawaiian Island trip on Monday at Hawaii Pacific.
