Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Victory over Fresno Pacific

Trailblazers erase 0-2 deficit to earn their ninth win of the year

Dixie State's rallied from a two-set deficit to come back and defeat Fresno Pacific, 3-2, Thursday night at the DSU Student Activities Center.

FPU had its way with the Trailblazers (9-11/7-5 PacWest) in the early going as the Sunbirds (9-13/7-6 PacWest) rolled to a 2-0 lead in the match after posting wins of 25-14 and 25-13 in the first two sets.

Following a spirited locker room pep talk by Head Coach Robyn Felder, Dixie State came out and scored the first four points of the third frame and never looked as the Trailblazers cut the deficit in half with a 25-19 win. DSU then completely wrestled the momentum away from the Sunbirds in set four with an 11-1 run, which turned a 10-10 tie into a 21-11 Trailblazer lead as the home side squared the match with a 25-14 set win.

Both teams battled back and forth early in the decisive fifth set, but DSU managed to pull away by scoring eight of the final 10 points to claim a 15-9 set win and complete the comeback.

Sophomore Lauren Gammell (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) tallied a game-high 14 kills to lead DSU, while junior Kayla Chapman (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) collected 10 kills and a team-high five total blocks. Dixie State survived a .077 hitting night thanks to its defense, which held FPU to a .065 percentage thanks to 11 total team blocks and 73 digs, including 15 digs junior libero Sid Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS).

Dixie State concludes its three-game homestand on Homecoming Saturday vs. PacWest newcomer Biola beginning at 6 p.m.
