Late Rally Lifts Men's Soccer Past Holy Names, 2-1

Moises Medina and Jandir Porta team up for both Trailblazer goals in final 9:22 of regulation time

Sophomore Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) scored two goals in the final 9:22 of regulation time to help rally Dixie State to a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win over Holy Names Tuesday night at Ramirez Field on the Fresno Pacific campus.

Holy Names (2-10-1/2-5-1 PacWest) took a 1-0 lead midway through the 18th-minute on the strength of a Carlos Vazquez-Perez goal. The Hawks' advantage stood for more than 60 minutes of play despite the fact that the Trailblazers managed to pepper the HNU defense with 18 shot attempts during that stretch, including six on frame, but DSU could not break through for the equalizer.

Dixie State (11-3-0/7-3-0 PacWest) finally solved the Hawks at the 80:38 mark of the match when sophomore Jandir Porta (West Valley City, Utah/Hunter HS) played a cross from the left wing to Medina, who finished at the left side of the frame to knot the score at 1-1. The duo would strike again exactly nine minutes later when again Porta would send a ball into Medina, who netted his fourth game-winning goal of the season with 22 seconds to play to complete the rally.

Medina's two goals, his 10th and 11th of the season overall, moved him into a tie with former DSU standout Jordan Roylance atop DSU's single-season goals list. Roylance, who is the only other player in program history to reach double figures in goals in a season, scored 11 goals as a freshman in the 2009 season. In addition, Medina's game winner was the ninth of his brief career, which is second only to Roylance (11; 2009-12) on DSU's career list.

Dixie State finished with a 22-7 edge in shots, including 9-2 on frame. Sophomore keeper Zach Nielson (West Point, Utah/Northridge HS) (W, 9-3-0) came on to start the second half and did not face a shot on goal in earning his ninth win of the season.

Dixie State will remain in Fresno to square off with Fresno Pacific this Thursday at 8 p.m. (PT).
