Dixie State jumped out to a first-half lead, but two second-half Point Loma goals spelled doom for the Trailblazers in a 2-1 loss in Pacific West Conference play Saturday afternoon in San Diego, Calif.
DSU (2-5-0/0-2-0 PacWest) got on the board with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first half when junior forward
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) tallied her fourth goal of the year off an assist from fellow junior
Montana Hadley (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont HS) to give the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead.
The Sea Lions (3-2-2/1-1-0 PacWest) pulled even 10 minutes into the second half when Cori Deason scored on a breakaway chance to tie the score at 1-1. Deason struck again with another breakaway goal to stake PLNU to a one-goal advantage with 24 minutes to play. DSU could not net the equalizer before time expired as the Point Loma held on for the victory.
"We had a terrific first half, but I was disappointed that we didn't put the game away early. We had enough chances and momentum to have a better result at halftime," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We talked at halftime about how teams like Point Loma are going to come out ready to play [in the second half]. We didn't play 90 minutes today and it cost us the game."
PLNU outshot Dixie State 15-11 in the match, though shots on goal were even at six apiece, with freshman
Kilee Lamb (Smithfield, Utah/Sky View HS) accounting for three of the Trailblazers' six shots on frame.
Dixie State returns home to Legend Solar Stadium for two PacWest matches next week as the Trailblazers host Holy Names on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 1.
