Volleyball Sweeps Sonoma State at D2 West Region Showcase Saturday

Lindsay Garrett with 12 kills in the victory

Dixie State wrapped up its four-match tilt at the 2016 D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase with a 3-0 sweep of host Sonoma State (25-18, 25-17, 25-21), Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Trailblazers (3-4) opened the match by scoring five of the first six points of set one and held a commanding 13-5 midway through the frame. SSU (2-4) managed to pull to within three points at 18-15, but DSU outscored the Seawolves 7-3 the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SSU jumped out to an early four-point lead at 7-3 to begin set two, but DSU erased the deficit with a 10-4 spurt to lead 13-11, and slowly pulled away from there to come away with an eight-point set win and a commanding 2-0 lead. Sonoma again took a early lead in the third stanza, but again Dixie State wrestled the advantage away eventually taking the lead for good at 19-18 and would go on to outscore SSU 6-3 to close out the set and clinch the match victory.

DSU had eight players register at least one kill, led by senior middle blocker Lindsay Garrett (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) who put away a co-game high 12 kills, while outside hitters Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) and Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) each collected seven kills.

Dixie State will conclude its season-long six-match road swing and will open PacWest play with two matches in southern California next weekend, beginning with a date at Point Loma on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. (PT) in San Diego. DSU will then travel up the I-5/I-405 to Irvine to play at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. (PT).
