Senior outside hitter
Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) connected for a career-high 23 kills to help lead Dixie State to a 3-1 victory at Point Loma (24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20) in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams Friday night in San Diego.
The Trailblazers (4-4/1-0 PacWest) led for most of the opening set and held a commanding 24-20 lead on serve, but the Sea Lions rallied with six-straight points to close out the frame and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
That rally served as a wake-up call as DSU went on to win the next three sets, beginning with a six-point win in game two, while the Trailblazers looked like they would make quick work of the Sea Lions in the third stanza as they bolted out to a 19-10 lead. However Point Loma mounted another charge, outscoring DSU 10-2 to cut the deficit to 21-20, but this time the Trailblazers responded by scoring four of the final five points of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Point Loma (2-7/0-1 PacWest) jumped out to an early 7-4 advantage in set four, but Dixie State pulled even at 9-9, and took the lead for good three points later and never looked back as the Trailblazers cruised to conference road win.
Daniel's 23 kills tied for the third-highest single-game total in DSU's NCAA-era as the senior hit .352 in the match and notched her fourth double-double of the year with a game and career-high 22 digs.
In all DSU put down a season-high 66 kills, including a season-high 13 kills from junior
Brette Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) and 11 more off the right arm of sophomore
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS). Senior setter
Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) recorded her first double-double of the year with a season-high 50 assists and 14 digs, while she and Duryea each had three aces as DSU finished with 10 aces on the night.
DSU will travel up the I-5/I-405 to Irvine to play at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday at 5 p.m. (PT).
