Softball drops regional opener to CWU

The Dixie State softball team dropped the opening game of the NCAA Division II West 2 Regional on Thursday, falling 2-0 to No. 21 Central Washington in Azusa, California.

The Trailblazers (36-14), No. 7 in the West Region, recorded two hits and left seven runners on base, while CWU, West Region No. 2 seed, turned four hits into two runs en route to the victory.

Central Washington picked up two of their four hits in the first inning. After a groundout to second base, the second batter singled to left field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Another single then scored the runner from second to give CWU a 1-0 lead.

Dixie State looked to answer in the third inning when Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) singled to left field and Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out. However, both runners were stranded after CWU forced outs on the next two plays.

In a near carbon copy of the third inning, Hartman was hit by a pitch and Bassett walked to put two on with one out in the fifth. Two batters later, CWU opted to intentionally walk Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) to load the bases with two outs. But a groundout on the next play ended the inning and left three DSU base runners stranded.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a runner from second on a single up the middle.

DSU went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, sealing the CWU win.

Hartman led the way at the plate for DSU, going 1-for-2, while Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) recorded the other hit of the day with a 1-for-3 performance. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) took the loss (20-5) in the pitcher's circle, striking out three and allowing four hits in six innings.

The Trailblazers will take on No. 6 seed UC San Diego, which fell 2-0 to Azusa Pacific on Thursday, in the first elimination game of the tournament on Friday at noon Mountain Time. The game, originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT, was moved up due to oncoming inclement weather.
