Softball ends season with 2-1 loss to UCSD

Trailblazers finish with 36-15 record

The Dixie State softball team saw its season come to end on Saturday, falling 2-1 to UC San Diego in the elimination game of the NCAA Division II West Regionals.

The Trailblazers finish the season with a 36-15 record, finishing tied for second in the PacWest (24-8) and making its eighth consecutive trip to the West Regionals in 2016.

The teams resumed play on Saturday after lightning and rain postponed the conclusion of the game on Friday. Dixie State entered the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 2-1 and could not get any closer.

DSU had its best chance to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) drew a leadoff walk, and Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) entered the game as a pinch runner. Three pitches later, Godfrey stood on third with no outs after advancing on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) then walked to put runners on the corners with no outs for the Trailblazers. Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) pinch ran for Woodfall and advanced to second when Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS), pinch hitting for Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), grounded out to the pitcher, but Godfrey was held at third. DSU was left with runners on second and third with one out, but a strikeout and popup to second base ended the inning, pushing the runners left on base total to six.

Dixie State went down in order in the seventh, sealing the win for UC San Diego.

Woodfall led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, while Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) went 2-for-4. Feickert took the loss in the pitcher's circle to finish the season at 20-6, striking out six to push her career and single-season strikeout record totals to 458 and 178, respectively. Feickert also ends her DSU career as the all-time leader in shutouts (16) and lowest opponent batting average (.212).
