The Dixie State softball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Concordia at Karl Brooks Field, salvaging a split of the four-game series in the process.

The Trailblazers fell, 7-3, in game one after the game went to extra innings, and the Eagles scored four runs in the eighth inning. DSU bounced back in game two, holding off Concordia for a 9-5 win to end the regular season with a 36-13 overall record and a 24-8 mark in the PacWest.

GAME ONE

Dixie State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of game one, scoring two runs on two hits. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) drew a walk to open the inning, then stole second. Two batters later, Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) drove the 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field for her second home run of the season.

The Eagles cut the DSU lead in half in the top of the third, scoring when the CUI batter grounded out to shortstop, allowing a runner to score from third. Concordia tied the score at 2-2 one inning later with a solo home run.

The Trailblazers answered in the bottom half of the fourth, taking advantage of a dropped ball at first base to regain the lead at 3-2.

The lead didn't last long, as Concordia again evened the score in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left field. The game eventually went to extra innings, and the Eagles scored four runs on two hits, including a three-run home run, to win the game.

Honey led the way at the plate in game one, going 1-for-3 and drawing a walk to go with a two-run home run.

GAME TWO

Like game one, Dixie State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of game two. The Trailblazers batted through the order scoring four runs on an RBI-single by Honey, and a two-run single by Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS).

Concordia answered with a two-run single in the top of the second, cutting the DSU lead to 4-2.

DSU picked up where it left off in the bottom of the second, loading the bases after the first three batters. After a CUI pitching change, Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) singled to left center field, scoring Bassett from third. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) then singled through the left side, scoring Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) from third. Honey advanced to third, then scored on the play to extend the lead to 7-2 when the throw from left field sailed over the catcher.

The Eagles pushed two runs across in the top of the sixth, scoring a on leadoff solo home run to center field and a sacrifice fly to right field.

Dixie State matched the two-run effort in the bottom half of the sixth, pushing the lead to the 9-4 when Paulson and Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) scored after a fielding error at third base.

CUI added a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but the DSU defense tightened and closed out the 9-5 victory to seal the series split.

Bassett led the way at the play in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and making multiple dazzling catches in center field. Honey also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle, throwing a complete game to improve to 12-4.

Dixie State will learn if it qualifies for one of two NCAA West Regional tournaments during the NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show on Monday at 8 a.m. Mountain Time. The show will air on NCAA.com.
