No. 13 Softball drops Friday DH to No. 9 CBU

The No. 13 Dixie State softball team dropped both games of a Friday afternoon doubleheader to No. 9 California Baptist at Karl Brooks Field, after the rainy weather delayed the start of the first game by 45 minutes.

The Red Storm (27-9, 15-5 PacWest) managed just three hits in Game One, as the Lancers snapped DSU's 14-game win streak with a 2-0 win. DSU bounced back with 12 hits in Game Two, but left eight runners on base and fell 7-5.

GAME ONE

The teams played a defensive battle through the first four innings of Game One, before the Lancers scored the only runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) forced the leadoff hitter into a groundout to second base and struck out the next batter. But the next batter reached on a throwing error, setting up a two-run home run over the left field wall for CBU's Erin Burkhart to give the Lancers a 2-0 advantage, a lead that would hold up for the remainder of the game.

DSU got runners to first and seconds with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but couldn't bring them home. The Storm went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win for CBU.

Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS), Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS), and Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) each went 1-for-3, while Feickert took the loss to drop to 15-4, striking out 10 batters and giving up six hits.

GAME TWO

The Lancers picked up where they left off in Game Two, taking advantage of a DSU error and a walk to load the bases in the top of the first. The next CBU batter, London Miller, worked the count to 3-2, then hit the next pitch over the wall in left center field for a grand slam to give the Lancers an early 4-0 lead.

CBU added to the lead in the top of the second, scoring two runs on a double down the left field line to push the lead to 6-0.

DSU cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, when Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) belted a two-RBI single to right field to pull within 6-2. The Storm closed the gap to 6-3 in the fourth inning when Hartman singled to center field, scoring Johnson from third.

CBU scored its final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single up the middle to push the lead back to 7-3.

Dixie State put two runners on base in the sixth inning with one out after an error and a walk. Bassett then drove the 2-1 pitch over the right fielder, scoring Johnson from second to cut the deficit to 7-4. But Bassett was called out on the play for passing Hartman in the base path between first and second after Hartman began retreating to first while waiting to see if the fly ball would be caught.

The Storm trimmed the lead to 7-5 in the seventh, when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) singled down the right field line, scoring Gonzalez from the second. But DSU would get no closer, as the next two batters went down, and CBU claimed the doubleheader sweep.

Bassett led the way at the plate in Game Two, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Paulson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Hartman finished at 1-for-2 with an RBI. Beardshear took the loss, falling to 8-3.

The Storm and Lancers will wrap up the four-game series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader starting at Noon at Karl Brooks Field.
