No. 13 Softball splits Monday twinbill with No. 9 CBU

DSU wins final game as Red Storm, finishes DH as Trailblazers

The No. 13 Dixie State softball team split its doubleheader with No. 9 California Baptist on Monday at Karl Brooks Field, falling 3-1 to the Lancers in the four-game series.

Dixie State (28-10, 16-6 PacWest) started the doubleheader as the Red Storm, earning the school's final victory under the old nickname in Game One, 3-0, behind RBI from Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS), Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), and Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS). DSU became the Trailblazers in the bottom of the second inning of Game Two, eventually falling 5-4, after a seventh-inning rally fell short.

GAME ONE

Dixie State jumped out to an early lead in Game One, when Woodfall singled to center field to score Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) from third. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) scored from third later in the inning when Paulson put the ball in play to the shortstop. Paulson reached first on an error by the shortstop, while Gonzalez crossed the plate to push the lead to 2-0.

DSU extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, when Honey entered the game as a pinch hitter and doubled to right center field to score Woodfall from first. The hit marked Honey's fourth consecutive successful pinch-hit appearance (three hits and a walk).

California Baptist tried to start a rally in the top of the seventh, but the DSU defense wouldn't allow it. CBU placed a runner on first after a one-out walk, but she would get no further. Bassett ended the game on a diving catch in center field to seal the victory.

Woodfall led the way at the plate in Game One, going 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Honey and Paulson both recorded an RBI. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 16-4, striking out seven.

GAME TWO

Dixie State also grabbed an early lead in Game Two, when Honey doubled to left field to score Woodfall from third for a 1-0 advantage. The hit came minutes after Trailblazers was announced as the new DSU athletic identity, making the double the first hit in DSU Trailblazers history.

The Lancers evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth with an RBI-single through the left side. CBU then broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs, three on a home run to left field, to take a 5-1 lead.

The Trailblazers closed the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, when Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) doubled to left field, scoring Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) from second. DSU held the Lancers in the next two innings and made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.

Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) opened the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a single by Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS). A throwing error allowed both Johnson and Hartman to advance to third and second, respectively. Bassett then scored Johnson with an RBI-single to center field, moving Hartman to third. Bartholf sent the next pitch to right field, allowing Hartman to score and Bassett to move to third on a sacrifice fly. With Bassett on third and only one out, the Trailblazers had cut the lead to 5-4. But they would get no closer. After a pop up to the pitcher and a ground out to second base, the Lancers sealed the win and the 3-1 series victory.

Woodfall again led the way at the plate in Game Two, going 2-for-3, while Bartholf finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Beardshear took the loss in the pitcher's circle, falling to 8-4.

The Trailblazers now head to the Bay Area for doubleheaders at Holy Names on Saturday and Academy of Art on Sunday.
