Softball splits with Concordia on Senior Day

CUI wins weather-postponed Game 1, DSU wins Game 2

The Dixie State softball team completed a split of the first two games of a four-game series with Concordia on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field. DSU also honored its three seniors including pitcher Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS), outfielder Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS), and catcher Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS), playing in their final games this weekend at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (35-12, 23-7 PacWest) and Eagles resumed game one, which was postponed Friday evening due to lightning and rain, in the bottom of the sixth inning with DSU trailing 8-5 with runners on first and third with one out.

Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) returned to the batter's box facing an 0-2 count and struck out looking. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) then drew a walk to load the bases, but the bases would stay loaded as a groundout to short ended the sixth inning.

Dixie State retired the CUI side in order in the top of the seventh and put two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning. But, like the sixth inning, the runners would be stranded, and the Eagles closed out the 8-5 win. In all, DSU stranded 13 base runners in the game.

Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) led the way at the plate for DSU in game one, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and a home run, while Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) went 2-for-3.

GAME TWO

Concordia wasted no time taking the lead in game two, jumping to a 2-0 advantage with a two-run home run to left field.

Dixie State answered in the bottom of the second, turning four hits and three CUI errors into eight runs (four earned) for an 8-3 lead. The Trailblazers batted through the order in the inning, as Beardshear started things off with an infield single to short. Beardshear and Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) later scored the first runs of the inning on a wild throw to the plate. Johnson then scored from third after an intentional walk of Bassett, followed by a conventional walk of Yung with the bases loaded. DSU added five more runs in the inning on RBI hits from Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS), Woodfall, Paulson, and Beardshear, in her second at-bat of the inning.

The Eagles closed the gap to 8-6, scoring one run in the third and three runs in the fifth, and looked to tie the game late in the fifth inning. With two outs and two on, the CUI batter ripped a line drive to the gap in right center field that seemed destined to bring the base runners home. But Bassett wouldn't allow it. The sophomore outfielder sprinted to the gap and made a diving catch to end the inning and preserve the lead.

The Trailblazers added a run to push the lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth when Woodfall singled, scoring Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) from second. The rest of the DSU defense then tightened, retiring the Eagles in order in the sixth inning and turning a double play in the seventh to seal the 9-6 victory.

Yung led the way at the plate in game two, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Woodfall went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Paulson added an RBI with a 2-for-4 performance. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out two in four inning of work for her 20th win of the season. Beardshear earned her first save of the season, allowing two hits in three innings pitched.

Dixie State and Concordia wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Karl Brooks Field.

NOTES: Through the first two games of the four-game series, Bassett is batting .625 (5-for-8) with three RBI, two doubles, one home run, and three runs scored … Yung is hitting .833 (5-for-6) … Feickert's 20th win moves her into a tie for fourth for most wins in a season at DSU.
