Softball sweeps BYU-Hawaii in Monday twinbill

Bassett goes 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored

The Dixie State softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of BYU-Hawaii on a rainy Monday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.

Cloudy weather turned to rain in the early afternoon, delaying the start of the doubleheader by 41 minutes. Unfazed, the Trailblazers (34-11, 22-6 PacWest) ended both games in five innings. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) struck out six and allowed one hit, while Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) went 3-for-4 with an RBI en route to an 8-0 victory in game one. Bassett picked up where she left off in game two, going 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBI, while Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle and hit 3-for-3 to wrap up a 9-1 win.

GAME ONE

Dixie State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead after an RBI-double by Jessica Gonalez and an RBI-single by Beardshear.

The Trailblazers broke the game open in the second inning, adding four runs on three hits. Gonzalez brought the first run across the plate with her second RBI of the game, a single to left center field. Two batters later, Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to center field to extend the lead to 6-0.

DSU wrapped up the victory in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring on a Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) RBI-double down the left field line and an RBI-single to left by Bassett to secure the 8-0 win.

Bassett led the way at the plate in game one, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 19-4, striking out six to move to 158 strikeouts on the season, four shy of the DSU single-season record of 162.

GAME TWO

Like game one, the Trailblazers opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game two. Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) opened the scoring with a RBI-double to left field, followed by an RBI-single to left center by Gonzalez, her third RBI of the day.

And, like game one, Dixie State added four runs in the top of the second in game two to extend the lead to 6-0. Bassett blasted a triple to the wall in right center field to score the first two runs, followed by a Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) RBI-single and a sacrifice fly to center field by Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS).

DSU broke the game-one mold in the bottom of third, adding two runs on a Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) RBI-double down the right field line and an RBI on a ground out by Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS). Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) recorded the final run of the game for DSU in the bottom of the fourth, belting the 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to push the lead to 9-0.

BYU-Hawaii looked to keep the game alive in the top of the fifth, starting the inning with two singles and a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. The Seasiders scored on an RBI-single with two outs, but the next batter popped up to Hartman at shortstop, and the Trailblazers secured the 9-1 victory.

Eight different DSU players recorded an RBI in game two, led by Bassett, who went 1-for-1 with two RBI and two walks. Beardshear went 3-for-3 and earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 11-4.

Dixie State will close the regular season with a four-game series with Concordia at Karl Brooks Field on Friday and Saturday.
