Softball sweeps DH at Holy Names

Feickert throws no-hitter, moves into second in single-season strikeouts

The Dixie State softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Holy Names on Saturday at the College of Marin softball field in Kentfield, California.

The Trailblazers (30-10, 18-6 PacWest) took advantage of three HNU errors and pounded out 11 hits in game one, while Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts en route to a 7-0 win.  DSU sealed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two behind two home runs.

GAME ONE

Dixie State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one, as Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) stole home and after reaching on a fielding error, Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) scored on a Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) single.

The Trailblazers scored in each of the final four innings, starting with a Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to score Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) from third and give DSU a 3-0 lead.

Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) stole home in the top of the fifth, followed by an RBI-double by Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) to extend the lead to 5-0. Yung recorded her own RBI-double in the sixth inning, while Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) to score in the seventh to push the lead to the final score of 7-0.

Bassett led the way at the plate in Game one, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs, while Beardshear went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 17-4 on the season. Feickert threw her second complete-game no-hitter of the season, matching her career-high with 13 strikeouts. With the 13 strikeouts, Feickert moves to second (150) on DSU softball's single-season strikeout list, needing 13 more to surpass the single-season record of 162 set by Haley Schumers in 2008.

GAME TWO

Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) broke a scoreless draw in the top of the fifth inning in game two, blasting the 2-0 pitch over the wall in left center field to give Dixie State a 2-0 lead. The Trailblazers picked up where they left off in the sixth inning, adding two more runs when Paulson also belted a two-run home run to left field.

Holy Names threatened to stage a rally, loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth. But the Hawks only managed a single run before DSU got out of the bases-loaded jam, moving to the seventh with a 4-1 lead.

The Trailblazers scored two runs for the third consecutive inning in the seventh. Hartman started things off with a triple to center field, followed by an RBI-double down the left field line by Bassett. Bassett later scored when Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) singled, pushing the lead to the winning tally of 6-1.

Honey led the way at the plate in game two, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hartman went 2-for-3. Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 9-4, striking out two and allowing four hits.

Dixie State will close its four-game Bay Area trip on Sunday at Academy of Art in San Francisco, with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.

NOTES: Feickert faced 22 batters in game one and nearly completed the second perfect game in DSU softball history. A walk in the first inning and a fielding error in the third prevented the feat.
