Softball rolls to DH sweep at Academy of Art

The Dixie State softball team wrapped up its four-game Bay Area trip with a doubleheader sweep at Academy of Art on Sunday at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, California, finishing the trip with a 4-0 record.

The Trailblazers (32-10, 20-6 PacWest) scored six runs in the fifth inning in game one en route to a 9-0 win in five innings. DSU duplicated the feat in game two, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to secure a 7-1 victory.

GAME ONE

Dixie State opened the scoring in the top of the first in game one, when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) singled to score Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) from second. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) singled later in the inning, scoring Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

The Trailblazers added a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to center field from Bassett, allowing Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) to score from third.

DSU broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, turning three Academy of Art errors and six hits into six runs. With two outs and two on, Bassett looked to add to the lead and belted what appeared to be a two-run triple. However, it was determined Bassett had not touched first base. Bassett was called out, ending the inning with DSU leading by the final score of 9-0.

Bassett led the way at the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Paulson went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 18-4 on the season, striking out two and allowing one hit in four innings.

GAME TWO

Academy of Art opened the scoring in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when an AAU base runner on third stole home as part of a double steal attempt.

Dixie State answered with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead at 2-1 when Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) singled, bringing home Bassett from second. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning for the second run.

Like game one, the Trailblazers sealed the victory in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits, capped by a two-run single by Hartman and a two-run double by Yung to push the score to the final tally of 7-1.

Yung led the way at the plate in game two, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Beardshear threw her eighth complete game of the season, striking out three and allowing two hits to earn the win and improve to 10-4 on the season.

DSU plays its final road game of the regular season at Southern Utah on Wednesday at 3 p.m., before closing the regular season schedule with a six-game homestand.
