Dixie State first baseman
Samuel Hall (Ogden, Utah/Bonneville HS) had a day to remember as the senior homered twice and drove in a combined 11 runs to help lead the No. 25 Storm to a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader vs. Fresno Pacific Friday at Bruce Hurst Field. DSU (27-6/15-4 PacWest) pounded out 16 hits en route to a 15-4 triumph in the opener, while senior lefthander
Kolton Brost (Mona, Utah/Payson HS) hurled a complete-game four-hitter in the Storm's 10-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
Hall got DSU on the board early in game one as he connected for a two-run single to open scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Dixie State added three more runs in the second on another two-RBI hit from Hall and a passed ball that plated senior shortstop
Tanner Morache (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Surrey HS) to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Storm offense kept the momentum going with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run home run to left field off the bat of junior second baseman
Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS), to give DSU a nine-run cushion.
After FPU (13-19/8-10 PacWest) broke through with a run in the fifth, Dixie State put the game away with a decisive six-run home half of the frame. The Storm belted out eight hits in the rally as Morache, McLaughlin and
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) each drove in runs ahead of Hall, who belted a two-run homer to right field as part of the barrage, as DSU went up 15-1 and never looked back.
Senior righthander
Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, Wash./Cheney HS) (W, 3-1) scattered five hits and one run over five innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory, while two relievers limited the Sunbirds to just four hits and two runs over the final four innings to close out the game.
Hall drove in a career-high six runs as part of his 3-for-5 effort in game one, while McLaughlin doubled twice to go with his homer, and finished with four RBI and three runs scored. Junior catcher
Reece Lucero (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS), who had three hits and two RBI in the FPU series opener Thursday night, picked up two more hits and two RBI Friday, while Morache and
Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) each had two safeties.
In game two the Sunbirds drew first blood with an unearned run in their first at-bat to take their first lead of the day at 1-0 after a half inning. However that lead was short-lived as the Storm tallied a pair of two-out runs in their first swings. Kamachi drew a two-out walk and Hall cashed in the RBI chance with his first triple of the year to tie the score at 1-1. After a
Ryan Rodriguez (Folsom, Calif./Vista Del Lago HS) walk, junior outfielder
Jerome Hill II (Pittsburg, Calif./Pittsburg HS) drove home Hall with a single to center to give DSU a 2-1 lead.
Dixie State broke the game open in the second as Bice and Morache drew a pair of one-out walks to start the rally. Then following a McLaughlin groundout and intentional walk to Kamachi to load the bases, Hall quickly unloaded them on the first pitch he saw from FPU starter Josh Meledes (L, 1-6) for a grand slam home run to right centerfield to give DSU a commanding 6-1 lead. Rodriguez followed that up with a triple down the right field line and Hill II brought him home with a single to cap the Storm rally.
The run support was more than enough for Brost (W, 2-0), who was making his first-ever start in a DSU uniform after 41 combined appearances out of the Storm bullpen in his near two seasons. After the first-inning hiccup, Brost retired the next 10 Sunbirds faced and held FPU to just two hits with four strikeouts over his final six innings of work to earn his second win of the year.
Hall, who saw his 15-game hitting streak end in the series opener Thursday, finished with three more hits and five RBI in game two and fell just one double short of hitting for the cycle, though his first-inning triple did give him the cycle over the two games overall. In all, four of Hall's six hits on the day went for extra bases. Hill II also collected three hits to go with his two RBI.
Dixie State concludes its eight-game homestand in the series finale with FPU Saturday at 12 noon.
