Softball completes series sweep of NDNU with two wins Thursday

Gonzalez (5-for-6/4 RBI/HR) and Paulson (6-for-8) lead the way at the plate

The No. 15 Dixie State softball team completed the four-game series sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, picking up two more wins at the College of San Mateo softball field in San Mateo, California.

The Red Storm (21-7, 9-3 PacWest) started slowly in both games, but scored two runs in the fifth and sixth inning in each game to come away with back-to-back 5-1 victories and extend their winning streak to eight games. The Storm pounded out 25 hits on Thursday, led by Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS), who hit .833 (5-for-6) on the day with four RBI and a home run, and Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), who hit .750 (6-for-8) on the day.

"You have to string together wins when you're on the road,s and we've been able to do that these first few days," head coach Randy Simkins said. "There's a few things we can improve on, but I'm really pleased overall. To allow just two runs and commit only one error in four games on the road is really good."

GAME ONE

Notre Dame de Namur struck first in the bottom of the first in Game One, when Toni Cardoza sent the 3-2 pitch from Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) out of the park for a solo home run to give the Argonauts a 1-0 lead.

NDNU held the lead until the top of the third inning, when Gonzalez doubled to start a two-out rally. Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) replaced Gonzalez on second as a pinch runner and scored on the next play when Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) reached first on an infield single. Godfrey advanced to third as the ball took a high bounce and was able to score as the throw was made to first to tie the game at 1-1.

Dixie State added to the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) scored from third on a wild pitch. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) singled on the next play, scoring Woodfall from third base.
The Storm sealed the victory with two more runs in the top of the sixth, when Gonzalez singled to score Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) from third and Yung scored on a passed ball for the second time in as many innings.

Gonzalez led the way at the plate in Game One, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS), Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), Woodfall, and Johnson each went 2-for-4 for the game. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 12-3 on the season, throwing a complete game, three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Red Storm opened the scoring in the top of the third in Game Two, when Gonzalez recorded her second RBI of the game, a single to score Bassett from third base and give DSU an early 1-0 lead.

Gonzalez picked up where she left off in her next at-bat, driving a two-run blast over the fence for her fifth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning after Yung opened the inning with a double.

Dixie State extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth, when Yung singled to score Paulson from second and Bassett from first.

NDNU broke the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out home run, but the next batter grounded out to seal the victory and the four-game series sweep for DSU.

Gonzalez again led the way at the plate in Game Two, turning in a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI and a home run. Paulson went 4-for-4, while Yung finished the game at 2-for-3 with an RBI. Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 6-2 on the season, striking out two with no walks.

The Storm now head north to San Rafael, California, for a doubleheader at Dominican on Saturday at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
