Softball rallies to complete doubleheader sweep of Hawai’i Pacific

Bassett goes 7-for-8 with four RBI, Storm hit three home runs on Saturday

The No. 19 Dixie State softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at Karl Brook Field, evening its Pacific West Conference record at 3-3 in the process.

The Red Storm (15-7, 3-3 PacWest) enjoyed victories on both ends of the spectrum, rolling to a 13-1, five-inning win in Game One, and rallied to overcome a 3-2 deficit for a 7-4 win in Game Two, thanks to a three-run walk-off home run by Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS).

"It was good to come back after not having a great weekend at Azusa Pacific and string some conference wins together," head coach Randy Simkins said. Hawai'i Pacific is well coached, they're solid defensively, and they put the ball in play a lot. You know you have to play well to beat them, so anytime you can get two wins over HPU it's a good day.

GAME ONE

Dixie State wasted no time building its lead in Game One, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first after Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) retired the Hawai'i Pacific side in order with two strikeouts in the top half of the inning. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) started things off with a single through the left side and later scored when Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk. Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) scored on a passed ball at the plate, while Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) advanced to third and Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) advanced to second to set up a 2-RBI double from Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS). Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) capped the six-run inning with a two-run blast over the wall in left center field for her first home run of the season.

The second inning was a carbon copy of the first, as Feickert struck out the first two batters and forced a groundout to second base to retire the side in order. Bassett singled to open the bottom half of the inning for DSU, followed by Yung's first hit of the day, a single through the right side. Bassett scored on the next play when Woodfall singled to center field.

Alexa McCoin replaced Alexis Morales in the pitcher's circle for HPU, and Beardshear stepped to the plate as the first batter to face the new pitcher. Trailing 1-2 in the count, Beardshear found her pitch and singled through the right side, scoring Yung from third. Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) and Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) also recorded RBI singles in the inning, while Bassett recorded a 2-RBI double and Yung capped the inning with an RBI single of her own after the Storm worked back to the top of the lineup.

HPU scored its only run of the game in the top of the third inning when Mari Kajiwari singled to center field, scoring a runner from second base, but would get no closer as the Storm retired the final six batters of game to earn the 13-1 win in five innings.

Bassett led the way in Game One, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Yung and Beardshear each logged 2-for-2 performances with one and three RBI respectively. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out five and allowing just two hits.

GAME TWO

The scoring slowed in Game Two, as Dixie State scored the only run between the teams through the first four innings when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) scored on a fielding error in the bottom of the second inning.

Hawai'i Pacific evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when pitcher Paige Crawford homered to left field. The tie didn't last long, as Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) matched the Crawford home run with her own blast over the wall in left center field for her first home run in a Red Storm Uniform in the bottom of the fifth inning.

HPU took the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Kayla Sanchez joined the home run derby, sending the 2-2 pitch into the palm trees in center field to give the Sharks a 3-2 advantage.

The Red Storm went down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning and faced a two-out situation in the bottom of the seventh inning when Bassett stepped to the plate with Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) on first. Bassett worked the count to a full count and found the gap in left center field with the payoff pitch for an RBI triple to send the game to extra innings.

The teams quickly went down in the eighth and ninth innings, bringing the conference tiebreaker rule into effect. HPU placed Sienna Santiago on second to start the top half of the 10th inning and took a 4-3 lead when Santiago scored on an RBI single in the first HPU at-bat of the inning.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of 10th, DSU placed Hartman on second to start the inning. Hartman advanced to third and later scored when Bassett doubled to center field to tie the game at 4-4. Yung drew a walk, followed by a popup to the catcher by Woodfall for the second out of the inning. With two outs and two runners on base, it was all up to Gonzalez. And she did not disappoint. Gonzalez drove the first pitch over the wall in left center field for a three-run walk-off home run, her third home run of the season.

Bassett again led the way at the plate for DSU, going 4-for-5 with two RBI in Game Two to finish the day at 7-for-8 with four RBI. Feickert earned her second win of the day in the pitcher's circle, taking over for Beardshear in the sixth inning to improve to 10-3 on the season. Feickert struck out five batters and allowed three hits in Game Two, finishing the day with 10 strikeouts and five hits allowed in 7.2 innings of work.

Dixie State and Hawai'i Pacific wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field on Sunday starting at Noon.
