Storm Softball falls in heartbreaker to #22 West Texas A&M

The No. 2 Dixie State softball team fell in heartbreaking fashion, 7-6, to No. 22 West Texas A&M on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field.

The Storm and the Buffs needed extra innings to decide a winner in a game that lasted more than three hours. Both teams left base runners stranded in the extra innings, as DSU found itself in a jam in the bottom of the eight inning. With two runners already on base, Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) walked the next batter to load the bases for the Buffs with two outs. However, Feickert went to work and forced WTAMU second baseman Brittany Gehle to pop up to Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) at shortstop to end the inning.

Dixie State got the stop it needed and looked to make its move in the top of the ninth. But the Storm went down in three consecutive batters, and nine pitches later, West Texas A&M catcher Lacey Taylor blasted the 2-1 pitch over the right field wall to end the game.

The Storm raced to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) and Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) both belted 2-RBI singles. DSU added two runs in the top of the third inning to extend its lead to 6-0. With a six-run advantage, Dixie seemed poised to run away with the game. But the Buffs had other plans.

WTAMU answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to even the score at 6-6, where it remained until Taylor's walk-off home run.

Woodfall led the way for DSU, going 3 for 4 with two RBI and scoring two runs.  Bassett finished the game at 2 for 4. Feickert, who entered the game in the bottom of the third in relief of Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS), recorded seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Storm return to action with two games on Sunday against Colorado State-Pueblo at 12:30 p.m. and Fort Lewis at 3 p.m.
