Josh Fuller (Rexburg, Idaho/Madison HS) scored six of his career-high 29 points in overtime to lead four Storm players in double figures as Dixie State outlasted California Baptist, 94-88, in a Pacific West Conference showdown Saturday night in the Burns Arena.
DSU (11-8/8-5 PacWest) led 41-29 at the half as the Storm opened the game with an 11-2 run and pushed that advantage to as many as 19 points at one point in the stanza. Fuller tallied 15 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting in carrying the bulk of the offensive load in the frame.
Meanwhile, the Storm defense held the high-powered Lancer offense to just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) shooting and forced seven CBU turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play.
California Baptist (18-6/9-5 PacWest) did not go quietly in the second half as the Lancers chipped away at the deficit, outscoring Dixie State 25-12 over the first nine minutes of the frame to take their first lead of the contest at 54-53 with 10:54 to play. Dixie State came back with a pair of Fuller baskets to reclaim the lead at 57-54, but the Lancers responded with six-straight points to push back ahead at 60-57 with 7:38 on the clock.
The two teams then battled back and forth through four ties and four lead changes until the 1:08 when Marquise Mosely hit a driving lay-up to give CBU a 72-69 lead. Dixie State answered back on its next possession as Fuller found sophomore
Brandon Simister (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) for a 3-pointer to knot the score at 72-72 with 49 ticks on the clock.
DSU's defense forced a missed shot on the Lancers' next trip down the court, but CBU forward Kalidou Diouf came up with the loose ball on the carom and scored the put back and drew a foul. Diouf converted the conventional 3-point play to push the Lancers' lead back to three again at 75-72 with 21 seconds to go.
After a DSU timeout, freshman
Quincy Mathews (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) escaped the baseline to the right wing and found senior
Mason Sawyer (West Jordan, Utah/West Jordan HS), who nailed a contested 3-pointer with six seconds left to draw the Storm even at 75-75. CBU missed on a desperation heave and the game went on to overtime.
Dixie State jumped out to a quick 80-75 lead to begin the extra session as Fuller converted a 3-point play and senior
Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) knocked down a pair of free throws. Again CBU would rally, pulling even at 82-82 on two Michael Smith charity tosses, and the Lancers jumped ahead again at 85-82 on an Alexander Birketoft trey with 2:03 to go after a Storm turnover.
DSU pulled even at 85-85 thanks to a Sawyer jumper and free throw with 1:21 to play. The Storm got a big defensive stop on CBU's next possession and DSU cashed it in on the offensive end as Fuller was left alone at the top of the key and he calmly stepped up and drilled just his third 3-pointer of the year to push the Storm ahead at 88-85 with 34 seconds to play.
Dixie State got another stop on the Lancers ensuing possession and after Sawyer was fouled to stop the clock, CBU forward Trevone Williams was whistled for a technical foul, which gave the Storm four free attempts. Simister knocked down the two technical free throws, and Sawyer hit on both ends on his trip to the line to make it a three-possession lead at 92-85 and the DSU never looked back.
"Boy that felt a lot like a tournament game tonight, it was a lot of fun," DSU Head Coach
Jon Judkins said. "I thought we were on our heels a little bit [in the second half] and give [CBU] credit. We figured out a way to win. Our guys fought back and I'm glad at how hard they played, but we didn't play smart all the time like I wanted them to."
Fuller hit 10-of-16 from the floor and went 8-of-11 at the line in his best point production night in a Storm uniform, while Sawyer tallied a season-high 21 points, including 14 points in the second half and overtime periods. Simister finished with 13 points off the bench and senior
Robbie Nielson (Gresham, Ore./Barlow HS) chipped in 10 points.
DSU shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the floor, including a perfect 4-of-4 in the extra frame, and hit on 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the perimeter. DSU and CBU finished with 41 rebounds apiece, with Ogden Jr. grabbing a game-high 15 boards to go with eight points and career-highs of five assists and three blocked shots.
Smith led four Lancers in double figures with 28 points, while Wheelwright tallied 19 points.
Dixie State continues its five-game homestand this Thursday night as the Storm hosts PacWest foe Academy of Art at 7:30 p.m.Â
