Softball sweeps doubleheader at Colorado Mesa

Paulson goes 4-for-4 with six RBI and a home run in Game One

The Dixie State softball team wrapped up its four-game Colorado road swing with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Mesa on Tuesday in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Red Storm (12-4) extended their winning streak to five games as they rolled to a 12-1 win in Game One behind a 4-for-4, six RBI performance from Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS). The scoring slowed in Game Two, but Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) allowed just four hits in seven innings of work to help DSU secure a 3-0 victory.

"This was a great trip for us," head coach Randy Simkins said. "I was pleased with our ability to put runs on the board early in the first game on both days. We did a great job on defense as well. Allowing only two runs in four games is impressive, especially on the road."

GAME ONE

Like the first game at Fort Lewis on Monday, Dixie State wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard in Game One at Colorado Mesa. The Storm took advantage of a pair of CMU errors and scored four runs in the opening inning. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) opened the scoring with a 2-RBI single, scoring Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) and Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS), and Paulson followed suit with her first RBI of the day, an infield single to the pitcher.

Colorado Mesa scored a run in the bottom of the first, but DSU added two more runs through the second and third innings. And then Paulson picked up where she left off in the first inning.

Paulson stepped to the plate in the top of the fourth after Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) drew a walk and Beardshear singled to put two runners on base with one out. With the count at 1-1, Paulson found the pitch she wanted and blasted it over the left field wall.

Paulson followed up the home run with a 2-RBI double in the fifth inning, scoring Gonzalez and Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS). In all, Paulson finished the game at 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and six RBI.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 8-2, striking out six batters while allowing just three hits.

GAME TWO

The scoring slowed significantly in Game Two, as neither team managed to put a run across through the first three innings of the game. With the scoring slowed, Dixie State set the tone for the game on defense.

Colorado Mesa opened the bottom half of the first inning with a single and looked to seize control of the game early after conceding 12 runs in Game One. But DSU stole it back on the next play as Paulson fielded a ground ball at first base, stepped on the bag for the force out on the batter, and mowed down the runner headed to second with a perfect throw to Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) covering the bag from shortstop. The next batter flew out to left field, and the momentum stayed in the Red Storm dugout.

The game remained scoreless until the DSU bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning. Bassett started the rally with an infield single to the shortstop and advanced to third when Bartholf doubled to left field. Yung and Gonzalez followed suit with back-to-back RBI singles. Yung moved to third base when Paulson grounded out, setting up the final run of the game. As Beardshear began working the count to 2-2 in the ensuing at-bat, Yung caught the defense unsuspecting and stole home as the catcher tossed the ball back to the pitcher.

Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 2-1, finishing with one strikeout and allowing four hits in seven innings of work.

Dixie State returns to action in Azusa, California, in its PacWest Conference opener at Azusa Pacific on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5.
