Softball opens PacWest play with doubleheader split at APU

Gonzalez blasts a grand slam to propel DSU to Game Two victory

The No. 18 Dixie State softball team opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader split at Azusa Pacific on Friday in Azusa, California.

The Red Storm (13-5, 1-1 PacWest) opened the day with an 8-0 loss in six innings in Game One, then bounced back with a 6-5 win in Game Two to earn the split.

GAME ONE

Both teams took turns leaving runners stranded in the first two innings in Game One until Azusa Pacific broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run.

The Cougars added three runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning and kept the Storm off the board to end the game in six innings.

Dixie State managed just four hits in the game, all coming from different players. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) took the loss in the pitcher's circle to fall to 8-3 on the season, giving up nine hits and five runs and striking out four in four and a third innings work. Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) pitched the final two-thirds of the fifth inning, giving up three runs on three hits.

GAME TWO

The Storm bounced back in Game Two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) singled to center field, scoring Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) from third base.

Azusa Pacific answered in the bottom of the first, laying down a bunt that brought the runner home from third and landed the batter safe at first base.

Dixie State regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) scored on a wild pitch, but it wasn't until the next inning that the Storm took control.

Bartholf started things off in the top of the fifth, drawing a walk. Yung reached on an error, and both runners advanced when Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) singled to load the bases. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) stepped to the plate and gave DSU a 6-1 lead with one swing of the bat, blasting a grand slam over the wall in left center field for her second home run of the season.

APU added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and three more with a home run in the bottom of the seventh, but the next batter grounded out to the shortstop to end the game and secure the 6-5 victory for the Storm.

Gonzalez led the way for DSU, finishing the game at 2-for-4 with four RBI. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 3-1 on the season, striking out two batters with no walks in the complete-game performance.

Dixie State and Azusa Pacific will play two more games on Saturday before the Storm return to Karl Brooks Field for doubleheaders vs. Hawaii Pacific next Saturday and Sunday.
