Four Storm players tallied double figures in a balanced scoring attack as Dixie State handed Head Coach
Jon Judkins his 200
th victory on the DSU bench with a 75-65 win at Dominican University Monday night in San Rafael, Calif. DSU pushed its season-high winning streak to seven games and has won 11 of their last 13 overall to move to 16-8 overall, 13-5 and in third-place in the Pacific West Conference standings with two regular season games to play.
In addition to his 200
th victory Monday night, Coach Judkins (200-99 overall at DSU) will coach in his 300
th-career game at Dixie State Wednesday night in the Storm's 2015-16 road finale at Fresno Pacific.
Dixie State erased a one-point deficit with a 14-4 run as the Storm scored the final four points of the first half, and 10 of the first 14 points of the second half, to turn a 30-27 halftime lead into a 40-31 advantage after a
Trevor Hill (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) dunk with 16:39 to play.
The Penguins used the long ball to get back into the game as Josh Ramirez and Matt Hayes connected from the perimeter to help pull Dominican back to within three at 44-41 with 13:20 to go. Dixie State came right back with a 3-pointer of its own as
Robbie Nielson (Gresham, Ore./Barlow HS) hit a trey, which sparked a 14-6 spurt to push the Storm lead to double digits at 58-47 with 8:29 remaining.
Dominican would make one last charge as the Penguins cut the Storm lead down to 60-54 with six minutes left, but DSU would not be denied as
Brandon Simister (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) and Hill combined to score 10 of DSU's final 15 points to salt away the victory.
"This is a good win, we knew this was going to be a tough game," Coach Judkins said. "[Like Saturday] I challenged them that this was a tournament game. [Dominican] is trying to get into the [PacWest] tournament and we're trying to get a better seed."
Hill, Simister and senior forward
Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each scored 15 points, with Ogden Jr. pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to notch his fifth-straight double-double and sixth in his last seven games overall. In addition, junior forward
Josh Fuller (Rexburg, Idaho/Madison HS) added 11 points and 10 rebounds for his second double of the season, while senior guard
Mason Sawyer (West Jordan, Utah/West Jordan HS) chipped in nine as DSU's five starters combined for 65 of the Storm's 75 points.
"I was proud of our guys tonight, I thought we came out tough," Coach Judkins said. "Second half we made some good adjustments defensively and I was very happy with that."
Dixie State shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor, including a 56.5 clip (13-of-23) in the second half. DSU also went to the line 37 times, but only converted on 25 of those attempts, with eight of those misses coming in the second half. DSU outrebounded the Penguins 44-26, including 14 offensive boards, which led to 15 Storm second-chance points.
"The one thing I was not happy with was our foul shooting," Judkins noted. "We'll work on that [in practice] and do a lot of foul shooting."
DSU held the Penguins to just 38.2 percent shooting (21-of-55). Ramirez led all scorers with 21 points.
Dixie State wraps up its 2015-16 road slate this Wednesday night at Fresno Pacific.
