Storm Women surge past Holy Names with big second half

DSU holds HNU to four 4th-quarter points and without a field goal in the period

The Dixie State women's basketball team extended its win streak to three games on Saturday with a 61-44 victory over Holy Names in Oakland, California.

The Red Storm (7-16, 7-10 PacWest) outscored HNU 37-16 in the second half and held the Hawks to just four points and without a field goal in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

DSU used a 14-3 run over the first six minutes of the second quarter to seize control of the game, turning a 15-10 deficit into a 24-18 lead. Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman) scored back-to-back baskets to spark the run, while Tomorie Sangster (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood ) nailed a triple on the back end of the run to help the Storm extend the lead.

Holy Names responded, finishing the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 28-24 lead in to the break. The Hawks maintained the lead until Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) made a 3-pointer halfway through the third quarter to give DSU a 35-34 lead it would not relinquish.

The Red Storm pulled away in the fourth quarter, finishing the game on a 26-10 run and allowing just two field goals over the last 15 minutes of the game.

"Tonight was a great defensive effort for our team," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "We played with great energy and effort throughout the entire game. Holding any team to only four points in the fourth quarter is always a positive way to end a game. I'm really proud of our team tonight."

Dixie State shot 40 percent (22-of-54) from the field, 46 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 73 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) led three DSU players in double figures, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds to push her career point total to 999. Mann will eclipse the 1,000-point mark with her first made field goal in the next game. Burge added 12 points and four rebounds, and Chermayne Moore (Pinole, Calif./Hercules) finished with 11 points.

DSU now heads to San Rafael, California for a Monday evening matchup at Dominican at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (6 p.m. MT).
