Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By DSU Athletics Media Relations

Taylor Mann joins 1,000-point club in loss at Dominican

Senior center Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) became the third player in program history to score 1,000 points, as the Dixie State women's basketball team fell, 78-69, at Dominican on Monday.

Mann started the game with 999 career points, needing one field goal to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.  She did just that on the first possession of the game, catching a pass in the post, spinning to the basket, and finishing with a foul to make history.

The Red Storm (7-17, 7-11 PacWest) held the lead for the first 29 minutes of the game, but could not overcome a late third quarter Dominican rally that saw the Penguins take the lead for good with an 18-3 run over the last six minutes of the third quarter.

Mann's game-opening 3-point play provided the momentum needed for a fast start as DSU opened a seven-point lead in the first quarter after Tomorie Sangster (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood ) made back-to-back baskets.

Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) opened the second quarter with a triple and DSU picked up where it left off. The Storm shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and took a 37-31 lead into the halftime break.

Dixie State built its first double-digit lead of the game in the third quarter when Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman) completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Storm a 47-37 lead. The teams traded baskets and 90 seconds later the lead was 51-41.

And then DSU went cold, going without a field goal for more than nine minutes. Burge ended the drought with a jumper with 7:52 remaining to pull within six points, but the damage had already been done. The Red Storm would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, eventually falling 78-69.

"That's a tough loss, but I'm proud of our overall team effort," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "We struggled from the field in the second half. We have to do a better job of closing out quarters and slowing down runs."

Dixie State shot 43 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 22 percent (5-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 73 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. Mann finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, pushing her career point total to 1,020. Mann sits at third in career scoring behind Johnna Brown (1,212) and Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) (1,055). Burge added 12 points and five rebounds, while Aliya Davis (Everett, Wash./Woodcreek) chipped in 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from downtown.

The Storm close their three-game NorCal swing on Wednesday at Fresno Pacific. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (6:30 p.m. MT).
