Softball splits on final day of Dixie State Classic

Jessica Gonzalez goes 7 for 7 with four RBI and a home run

The No. 2 Dixie State softball team split its final two games of the Dixie State Classic on Sunday at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm (8-4) needed another seventh inning rally against Western New Mexico and fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Mustangs in the early game. DSU bounced back in the afternoon game, defeating Western Oregon 13-6 in six innings.

GAME ONE

Dixie State struck first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) singled to bring in Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) from third base. But the lead didn't last long.

Western New Mexico rattled off three runs in the top of third inning, turning a DSU fielding error into three different RBI situations.  Before Dixie State could retire the side, the Mustangs had racked up three runs on five hits and took a 3-1 lead.

The Storm didn't waste any time evening the score, pushing across two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third inning when Gonzalez singled to score Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) and Sarah Good (Castle Rock, Colo. /Castle View HS) later scored off a Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) RBI fielder's choice.

The teams remained deadlocked at 3-3 until WNMU again turned DSU errors into runs, this time to the tune of three runs on five hits. The Mustangs left the bases loaded, but the damage was already done.

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Red Storm would have to try to for their third comeback victory in as many games. Gonzalez brought the team to life, homering to left field to start the inning. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) followed up the home run with a double to left field. Paulson singled, moving Hartman to third, and the Storm were in business. Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) scored Hartman on a sacrifice fly to center field to pull within one at 6-5. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) popped up to the shortstop, bringing Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) to the plate for the chance to win the game for Dixie State. But the comeback magic ran out as Bartholf hit a blooper deep into the infield on the first base side and the first baseman snared the hit to end the game.

Gonzalez led the way for the Storm, going 3 for 3 with two RBI and a home run. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS), Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS), and Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) all spent time in the pitcher's circle, with Beardshear taking the loss.

GAME TWO

Dixie State looked to quickly move past the loss to WNMU and jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Western Oregon, scoring two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning. Gonzalez picked up where she left off in the second game and drove in the two runs in the first inning, while Bartholf drove in two runs and later scored in the second inning.

The Wolves cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning when the leadoff batter singled and the next batter blasted a home run over the center field wall. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) struck out the next two batters, but gave up another home run one batter later.

The Red Storm responded with their biggest inning of the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) scored on a sacrifice fly and Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) belted her first home run in a DSU uniform with two runners on base.

WOU scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 9-5, but the Red Storm would not be denied.

Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) brought in two runs with a single to center field in the fifth inning and Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) drove a sacrifice fly to the same spot to bring home Sarah Good (Castle Rock, Colo. /Castle View HS) from third base in the sixth inning. With one out, the Storm needed one run to end the game in six innings. Gonzalez singled to load the bases and Hartman drew a bases-loaded walk to win the game.

Gonzalez again led the way in game two, finishing the game 4 for 4 with two RBI. For the day, Gonzalez finished a perfect 7 for 7 at the plate with four RBI and a home run. Feickert threw a complete game in the circle, striking out six with three walks in six innings of work.

The Storm return to action one week from Monday for a doubleheader at Fort Lewis and a doubleheader at Colorado Mesa on Tuesday.
