Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Dominican University

Kailey Frei becomes Dixie State's career assist leader

Despite three Trailblazers tallying double figures in kills, Dixie State dropped a 3-1 Pacific West Conference decision to Dominican University Saturday afternoon at the DSU Student Activities Center. The loss snapped DSU's three-match winning streak as the Trailblazers fell 15-9 on the season, 11-5 in PacWest play. ??

The two teams split the opening two sets, with the Penguins (16-7/12-3 PacWest) claiming a 25-18 win in set one before DSU rallied to knot the match at 1-1 after taking the second frame by a 25-22 count.

The two sides battled back and forth in set three and DSU looked to be in good position to take the stanza leading 23-22, but Dominican rallied for three-straight points to win it 25-23 to go up a set in the match. Dixie State, which was without two of its starters on the day, led 24-21 late in set four, but the Penguins rallied again, this time with five-consecutive points to close out the match, 26-24.

Senior outside hitter Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) led DSU with a team-high 15 kills to go with 15 digs, while sophomore Kayla Chapman (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) and junior Malary Marshall (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) each threw down 12 kills apiece. In addition, senior Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) became Dixie State's career assist leader (2,328) as she collected a game-high 47 assists along with 11 digs and four total blocks. DSU's defense finished with 10 total team blocks, including a team-high six from Marshall, while sophomore libero Sidney Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) had 25 of DSU's match-high 80 digs.

Dixie State heads out on its final road trip of the 2016 regular season next weekend as the Trailblazers play at California Baptist on Friday, Nov. 11, followed by the road finale at Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 12.
