Dixie State could not overcome a hot-hitting California Baptist side as the Trailblazers fell in four sets to the Lancers Friday night in Riverside, Calif. With the loss, the Trailblazers dropped to 15-10 overall, 11-6 in Pacific West Conference play.
CBU (19-6/14-3 PacWest) used a 12-5 run to break open a tightly contested first set en route to a 25-18 win in the opening frame. The Trailblazers answered right back by hitting a season-high .452 in the second stanza and connected for 15 kills to claim a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1. However from that moment on it was all Lancers as CBU ran away with sets three (25-14) and four (25-12) to close out the match victory.
Senior outside hitter
Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) led the Trailblazers with a game-high 17 kills and hit .341 for the match. Daniel also became just the seventh player in DSU's NCAA-era to amass 300-plus kills in a season (312) and 600-plus career kills (610). Junior
Malary Marshall (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) finsihed seven kills, while sophomore
Shannon Sorensen (Smithfield, Utah/Sky View HS) added six kills and two total blocks, and senior middle blocker
Lindsay Garrett (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) returned to the DSU line-up and collected five kills and two total blocks.
California Baptist hit an opponent-season high .384, hitting .344 or higher in all four sets. Lauren Hackett led three Lancers in double figures with 17 kills.
Dixie State concludes its 2016 regular season road schedule Saturday afternoon with a PacWest match at Azusa Pacific beginning at 3 p.m. (PT).
