Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Concordia-Irvine Thursday Night

CUI nets goal with 38 seconds to play to dash DSU's PacWest title hopes

Dixie State saw its hopes of a possible Pacific West Conference title come to an end as Concordia-Irvine scored a goal with 38 seconds remaining to hand the Trailblazers a 1-0 loss Thursday night at Legend Solar Stadium.

The Trailblazers (10-7-0/8-4-0 PacWest), who were held to just four shots on goal on the night, had a great look at the match's first goal midway through the first half as junior Montana Hadley (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont HS) boomed a corner kick deep into the Eagles penalty area to senior Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS), but her header fell just wide of the mark.

DSU had another solid chance three minutes into the second half when junior Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) attempted a header from 5-yards out, but the PacWest's leading scorer's chance sailed just over the crossbar. Freshman Capri Goldsmith (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) had an open look at her first collegiate goal 18 minutes later, but CUI keeper Jazmin Alvarez made the save to deny the chance. Senior Erica Gonzalez (Avondale, Ariz./Westview HS) followed suit two minutes with a rocket shot off her right boot from 30-yards away, but again the ball managed to sail just over the crossbar.

Concordia-Irvine (11-2-4/7-2-3 PacWest), which only attempted two shots in the second half and nine in the match, put together a late push deep inside the DSU back third and managed to draw a foul on the Trailblazers just outside of the penalty area with 42 ticks remaining. Eagle forward Natalie Werner played a free kick from the right wing to the left post, where Keely Abt redirected the ball into the net for the eventual game-winning goal.

DSU could not mount a late charge in the waning moments and the Eagles escaped with victory. Dixie State outshot CUI 12-9, though the Eagles owned a 5-4 edge in shots on frame.

Dixie State will close out the 2016 regular season this Saturday night vs. PacWest rival California Baptist at Legend Solar Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday's match will also serve as "Senior Night" as seven Trailblazer seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to kickoff.
