Dixie State closed the 2016 season on a thrilling note on Saturday as the Trailblazers rallied to defeat California Baptist in overtime, 2-1, on Senior Night at Legend Solar Stadium.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of play, Dixie State (11-7-0/9-4-0 PacWest) came out aggressive in the second half, putting up five quick shot attempts during the first 11 minutes of the stanza, but could not break through for the match's first score.
The Trailblazers then put together a flurry of point-blank chances midway through the 58
th minute, which started when senior
Megan Spencer (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) rocketed a ball that Lancer keeper Sara Escobedo turned away. Senior
Erica Gonzalez (Avondale, Ariz./Westview HS) collected the carom and got off a shot of her own, but again Escobedo came up with a deflection save, which bounded back to Spencer, who bounced a shot off the crossbar. Gonzalez then secured the ball and scored what would have been the game's first goal, but the assistant referee signaled that Dixie State was offside, which nullified the goal.
California Baptist (10-5-3/9-2-2 PacWest) did manage to record the first goal of the match on a Jordan Dow shot at the 67:37 mark of the match. However the Lancers' celebration was short-lived as Dixie State came right back to score the equalizer just 10 seconds later when Spencer and freshman
Capri Goldsmith (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) combined to play a ball into Gonzalez, who tucked home her third goal of the year to knot the score at 1-1.
Then late in the first overtime period, sophomore
Nichole Mertz (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) sent a flip throw into the center of the CBU penalty area to junior
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS), who turned around and fired home her PacWest leading 12
th-goal of the season with just 26 seconds remaining to end the match. McCloy's goal was also her fifth game-winning-goal of the season, which broke DSU's NCAA-era single-season record for gamewinners previously held by former DSU player Mikala Wilkes, who had four GWGs in 2007 and again in 2009.
Dixie State outshot CBU 19-11, including a 10-6 edge on frame, with Spencer leading the way with five shots and senior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) finishing with four attempts. Senior netminder
Angelica Ciucci (Stockholm, Sweden/Thorildsplans Gymnasium) made five saves en route to her seventh victory in goal in her final collegiate start.
