Women’s Basketball falls to Sonoma State Friday, 82-58

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped the first game of its two-game road trip Friday, falling 82-58 to Sonoma State in Chico, California.

The Trailblazers (0-3) used a 6-0 run early in the first quarter to take its only lead of the game after redshirt sophomore guard Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) and junior forward Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) connected on back-to-back 3-pointers. Sonoma State answered with a 25-8 run over the final eight minutes of the first quarter to take a 29-14 lead.

The teams traded baskets in the second quarter, and the Seawolves took a 46-27 lead into the halftime break.

Sonoma State pushed the lead to 23 points at 60-37 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Trailblazers responded with a 9-0 run, taking advantage of four SSU fouls over the next minute of play to cut the lead to 60-46 with nine consecutive free throws.

The Seawolves pulled away for good in the fourth quarter, outscoring DSU 20-12 in the final period to clinch the victory.

Dixie State shot 32 percent (17-of-52) from the field, 19 percent (4-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 83 percent (20-of-24) from the free throw line. VanCampen led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. Junior forward Shelby Kassuba (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) added 12 points and four rebounds, while Jordan finished with eight points.

The Trailblazers close out their two-game trip with a Saturday evening matchup vs. host school Chico State at 7:30 p.m. PT (8:30 p.m. MT).
