Women’s Basketball drops 65-55 decision to Chico State Saturday

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a 65-55 decision to Chico State on Saturday in Chico, California.

The Trailblazers (0-4) fell behind early in the first quarter after consecutive Chico State 3-point plays. DSU responded with an 11-4 run to take an 11-10 lead after redshirt sophomore guard Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) and freshman guard Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) each connected on 3-pointers. Franks later canned a jumper as time expired in the first quarter to tie the score at 16-16 after one period.

The Wildcats used a 9-2 run midway through the second quarter to take a 34-25 lead. Dixie State pulled to within 36-30 later in the quarter when junior forward Shelby Kassuba (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) hit a 3-pointer, but CSUC answered with a layup on the next possession to take a 38-30 lead at halftime.

DSU scored just 10 points in the third quarter, highlighted by freshman guard Jaden Gonzales (Plainview, Texas/Plainview HS) connecting on her first collegiate 3-pointer, and CSUC took a 53-40 lead after three quarters.

The Wildcats stretched the lead to a game-high 16 points at 58-42 in the fourth quarter. Dixie State responded with a 5-0 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer by freshman guard Kili Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS), to cut the lead to 58-47 with 6:08 to play. The teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the period as CSUC clinched the victory.

Dixie State shot 37 percent (21-of-56) from the field, 36 percent (8-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 62 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line. Junior guard Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS), junior center Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS), and Jordan each finished with 10 points, while Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) and Kassuba added nine points each.

The Trailblazers return to the Burns Arena for a Monday evening matchup with Cal State East Bay at 5 p.m. The Pioneers enter Monday's game with a 1-2 record, opening the season with a win over Saint Martin's, followed by losses to Western Oregon and Menlo College.
