Women’s Basketball falls short vs. Simon Fraser

The Dixie State women's basketball team fell short on Sunday in a 60-46 loss to Simon Fraser at the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (0-2) trimmed the Simon Fraser lead to four points midway through the third quarter after trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half. However, DSU wouldn't get any closer as a team total of 28 turnovers dashed any hopes of completing the comeback.

Dixie State jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the midway point of the first quarter behind back-to-back layups from junior forward Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) and a 3-pointer from freshman guard Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS). Simon Fraser responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 12-8 lead. The teams traded baskets through the remainder of the period and the Clan maintained its 4-point lead at 16-12.

SFU scored the first six points of the second period to push the lead to its first double-digit advantage of the game at 22-12. The Trailblazers answered later in the quarter with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 25-23 with 3:35 remaining in the half after redshirt sophomore guard Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) canned a 3-pointer. The Clan later responded with its own 3-pointer to push the lead to 30-25 at the break.

The teams went back-and-forth through the first half of the third quarter as DSU pulled to within four points at 34-30 after a layup by junior center Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS). Simon Fraser began to pull away after the layup, extending the lead to 47-37 at the end of the period.

The Trailblazers tried to make a run in the fourth quarter, but the Clan answered each DSU basket and built the lead to a game-high advantage at 60-45 with 4:35 remaining. Burge hit a free throw one minute later to push the lead to the final score of 60-46, and the teams went the final 3:34 without a basket.

Dixie State shot 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field, 16 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc, and 72 percent (8-of-11) from the free throw line. Jordan led the DSU scoring efforts with nine points and six rebounds. Burge added eight points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) made a run at a triple-double with seven points, seven assists, and nine rebounds. VanCampen also finished with seven points to go with eight rebounds, while Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) finished with six points on 2-of-2 shooting from distance.

The Trailblazers now head to California for their first road trip of the season, taking on Sonoma State on Friday and Chico State on Saturday.
