Women’s Basketball falls to Colorado Mesa in season opener

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a 68-54 decision to Colorado Mesa on Friday at the Burns Arena in the 2016-17 season opener.

The Trailblazers (0-1) built a 17-13 lead in the first quarter behind nine points from junior guard Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS). CMU trimmed the lead to 17-15 at the end of the period after connecting on a jump shot with three seconds remaining.

Dixie State extended its lead to a game-high seven points at 22-15 early in the second quarter after junior forward Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) made a layup and junior guard Sandria Bolden (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) connected on her first 3-pointer of the game. The teams traded baskets through most of the period until Colorado Mesa used a 6-0 run to take a 34-28 lead with 1:40 remaining before halftime. DSU responded with a 3-pointer from junior center Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS) and a pair of free throws by junior guard Gabrielle Cabanero (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley HS) to cut the lead to 36-33 at the break.

The third quarter featured much of the same as the second quarter, as the teams went back and forth. Each time the Mavericks attempted to make a run, Dixie State answered with points of its own. Bolden and VanCampen each connected on 3-point shots in the quarter, and Colorado Mesa took a 47-42 lead to the final period.

CMU used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away for good, connecting on a 3-pointer to push the lead to 63-50. Freshman guard Kili Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) answered with a traditional 3-point play on the other end, scoring on her first collegiate shot attempt while being fouled. Franks sank the free throw to cut the CMU lead to 63-53 with 1:43 remaining. The Mavericks then closed the game on a 5-1 run to clinch the 68-54 victory.

Dixie State shot 31 percent (18-of-57) from the field, 26 percent (8-of-30) from beyond the arc, and 66 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw. CMU shot only two percent better from the field at 33 percent, but finished the game with a 53-40 advantage (including 21-9 on the offensive glass) in the rebounding battle. Burge finished with a team-high 13 points and six rebounds, while Ventling added 12 points and Bolden contributed 10 points. VanCampen finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Trailblazers return to action on Sunday, hosting Simon Fraser at 3 p.m. inside the Burns Arena.
