Dixie State completed a sweep of its three-match NorCal road swing with a 3-0 Pacific West Conference victory at Fresno Pacific Monday night. The win moved the Trailblazers to 15-8 on the season, 11-4 in PacWest play.
DSU, which did not drop a set on the road trip, trailed only twice in taking the first two sets by 25-18 and 25-22 counts. The Trailblazers then jumped out to an early four-point lead at 7-3 in set three, but the Sunbirds stayed within striking distance and eventually took a three-point lead of their own at 20-17. Trailing 21-18, Dixie State rallied to reclaim the lead at 23-22 thanks to three FPU hitting errors and kills from junior
Malary Marshall (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) and sophomore
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS). FPU pulled even one point later at 23-23, but consecutive kills from senior
Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) and sophomore
Shannon Sorensen (Smithfield, Utah/Sky View HS) put the match on ice as DSU claimed a 25-23 set win.
Daniel led the Trailblazers with a game-high 17 kills, while Duryea added eight kills and Marshall finished with seven kills and a team-high four total blocks, including two solo stops. Dixie State collected 45 total kills, with senior setter
Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) assisting on 35 of those kills, and the team hit .248 for the match, including a .306 clip in set three.
Meanwhile, DSU's defense held the Sunbirds (8-10/6-8 PacWest) to a .147 hitting percentage and finished with nine total blocks and 55 digs, including a game-high 17 digs from sophomore libero
Sidney Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) and 10 more from junior
Jaclyn Condie (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton HS).
Dixie State returns home to face Dominican University this Saturday, Nov. 5, at 12 noon inside the DSU Student Activities Center.
