Dixie State clinched at least a share of the Pacific West Conference title Monday afternoon with a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory over Notre Dame de Namur at Legend Solar Stadium. The win, the Trailblazers' 13th-straight overall, moved DSU (13-3-0) to 11-0-0 (33 points) in league play and a full two games in the PacWest standings ahead of second-place Concordia-Irvine (9-2-0; 27 points), which the Trailblazers will face this Thursday at home.
After a scoreless first half, NDNU (8-8-0/6-5-0 PacWest) broke through with the game's first goal in the 53
rd-minute when Naia Graham cashed in an odd-man rush with a goal just inside the right post past DSU keeper
Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) to stake the Argonauts to a 1-0 lead.
Dixie State had a good look at the equalizer two minutes later as freshman
Christian Hall (Layton, Utah/Northridge HS) headed a ball from inside the six-yard box, but Argonaut netminder Alex Clewis turned the chance away. Later in the frame, freshman
Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) sent a ball into sophomore
Dominic Damato (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS), but Damato's shot was blocked, while Medina had a chance with 12:35 to play, but again Clewis came up with a save to deny DSU the tying goal.
The Trailblazers finally solved Clewis with 7:18 remaining in regulation when senior
Bernard Manuel (Ghana, West Africa/Elko (NV) HS), who had just checked into the match, headed home a ball played in by a strong throw-in by junior
Bryan Baugh (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) to knot the match at 1-1. It was Manuel's first goal of the season, while Baugh recorded his 11
th-career assist to become DSU's career assist leader.
DSU then netted the game-winning goal with 4:08 left in the first overtime period when freshman
Blake Damato (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) booted a corner kick deep into the NDNU penalty area to senior
Kris Evans (Draper, Utah/Alta HS), who headed home his first career goal to complete the comeback.
Dixie State outshot NDNU 16-14, though the Argonauts held an 11-7 edge on frame. Trella stopped nine Argonauts shots, while the defense was credited with one team save.
The Trailblazers will now play for the outright PacWest championship when they host Concordia-Irvine this Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., at Legend Solar Stadium.
