Men's Soccer Handles Hawai'i Hilo Thursday, 3-0

Trailblazers extend school-record winning streak to nine matches

Dixie State extended its program-record winning streak to nine-straight matches and remained perfect in Pacific West Conference play with a 3-0 road result at Hawai'i Hilo Thursday.

DSU (9-3-0/7-0-0 PacWest) opened the scoring just before the halftime whistle when freshman forward Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) played a ball from fellow freshman Gustavo Ortega (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron Memorial HS) and netted his eventual team-leading fourth game-winning goal to stake the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

Dixie State would tack on two more goals in the second half, the first coming off the boot of junior midfielder Sean Jenne (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) (3), who took a pass from freshman Blake Damato (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) from the top of the box and scored his second in goal in as many matches midway through the 51st-minute. Then Medina put the match away early in the 68th-minute when he went top-shelf for his team-high fifth goal of the year to give the Trailblazers a three-goal cushion.

The DSU defense held the Vulcans (1-9-1/0-5-1 PacWest) to six total shots, five on frame, while Trailblazer keepers Zach Nielson (West Point, Utah/Northridge HS) (W, 4-0-0) and Eddie Ortiz (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron Memorial HS) combined for five saves as Dixie State posted its third-straight shutout victory and sixth of the season overall. DSU finished with a season-high 27 shot attempts, including 12 on goal.

Dixie State will close out its four-match Hawaiian road swing and its 2016 regular season road slate this Saturday at Chaminade.
