The Dixie State women's soccer team recorded its second straight shutout Tuesday, defeating Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 to improve to 2-0 for the first time in seven years. The Red Storm had not won consecutive matches to start the season since defeating Montana State-Billings and Eastern New Mexico in back-to-back games to begin the 2008 season.
Â
The Storm and Coyotes went back and forth in the first half, each taking their turn trying to break through with the game's first goal. Just when it seemed the match was heading for a tie at halftime, sophomore forward
Courtney Fryer (Spanish Fork, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) sent a ball into the box from the right side and freshman forward
Lizzy Newman (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) sent the pass into the back of the net in the 41
st minute for her first goal in a Red Storm uniform.
Â
Cal State San Bernardino had two shots just before the end of the first half, but both chances sailed wide. The Coyotes were undeterred by the halftime deficit and recorded 6-of-9 total shots in the second half in search of an equalizer.
Â
However, the Red Storm defense was up to the task as sophomore goalkeeper
Danica Nusink (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) played the full 90 minutes (three saves total) and came up big with back-to-back saves in the final 90 seconds of the match to preserve the shutout. Overall, the Storm attempted 11 shots, with three on goal and held CSUSB to just nine shots overall, and three on goal.
"It was huge to win this game on the road," Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "Our defense was solid today all over the field. It was a great goal scored by Liz in a key moment."
Â
Dixie State now makes the long trek north to Arcata, Calif., to take on Humboldt State University on Thursday in the third of four games in California. The match is set to start at 3 p.m. (PT).Â
