Dixie State's women's soccer team scored twice and played solid defense in picking up a 2-0 victory over Antelope Valley in the Storm's season-opener Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Calif.
DSU wasted little time breaking into the scoring column as junior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) found the back of the net off a feed from senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) early in the 11
th minute. Dixie would add an insurance goal in the 61
st minute when senior
Kaisa Rogers (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) scored off a pass from freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS).
Meanwhile the Storm defense held the Pioneers at bay, limiting UAV to just 10 shot attempts, three of which were on frame. Sophomore
Danica Nusink (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) and senior
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) (3 saves) combined to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard. Dixie State finished with 20 shots, eight on goal.
"It was a physical game but we did a good job handling it," Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "Our possession looked good today but we still need to work on being more dangerous in the final third. We were very happy to get the shutout."
Dixie State continues its four-match California road swing this Tuesday at 11 a.m. (PT), as the Storm squares off with Cal State San Bernardino. Â
