Dixie State had six players register at least five kills in a balanced attack as the Storm swept PacWest foe Holy Names in three sets, 25-16, 25-23, 25-16, on Homecoming Saturday at the DSU Student Activities Center. With the win DSU evened its conference mark at 2-2 and improved to 5-7 overall, while the Hawks dropped to 1-10/0-3 in PacWest play.
The Storm trailed just once in the opening set (3-4) after scoring the first three points and used an 12-4 run to erase the deficit to lead 15-8 before cruising to the nine-point set win. Both teams battled back and forth in set two with neither team enjoying more than a two-point lead at any time during the frame. Tied at 21-21 late in the stanza, the Storm used kills from
Makenzi Bird-Murphey (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS),
Brette Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) and
Lindsay Jones (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) to pull away and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Dixie State never trailed in the final frame as the Storm jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back. The Storm defense also came up big in the set as DSU recorded two total blocks and held the Hawks to a match-low .033 hitting percentage in securing the sweep.
Freshman
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) continued her solid play of late as she finished match-highs of 10 kills and a .600 hitting percentage (career-high). Jones added nine kills to go with four total blocks (one solo), while junior
Delayne Daniel (American Fork, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) had seven kills and Anderson totaled six kills and three blocks. DSU hit .299 for the match and had seven blocks in holding HNU to a .114 team hitting percentage.
